Killingaworth 503-288-6338 by Bob Lothian The Portland area's only Native American oriented radio program celebrated its tenth year this week "Indian W orld,” which is broad cast from 8 9 p m Mondays on KBOO FM 90 1. aired a special 10th anniversary show June 30 The program featured music by North and South American Indians and interviews about the threat to Indian reservations of nuclear con lamination from the Hanford Nu cleai Reservation Special features and interviews will be spaced through the year, said "Indian W orld" creator and host John T alley Talley has missed only one show in 10 years, he said Our feeling is very, very positive about the show That's why we ve put so much time into it, to serve the people," Talley said "Indian W orld” informs Indians and non Indians alike about mdi genous culture from the arctic to the tip of South America, according to Talley The program features music by Indians Indian news, an Indian calendar, interviews, com mentary, legends and poetry, he said " I think one of the key things about the program is that it is about contemporary Indian peo pie, ” Talley said Talley's first show in 1976 fea tured interviews with members of the Siletz Tribal Council, who were fighting to have their traditional land near Newport restored to the. Other programs have focused on Wounded Knee, the Big Mountain land rights struggle in Arizona, and Columbia River fishing rights Tai ley interviewed Mayor Bud Clark, also Vine DeLorea, Jr., author of "Custer Died for Your Sins," and LaDonna Harris, a Commanche In dian woman from Oklahoma who ran for vice president on the Citi zen's Party ticket. Talley, 55. a Mohawk Indian ori ginally from Syracuse, New York, said the philosophy behind "Indian W orld” is to offer a unifying mes sage to all Indian people and their supporters That's why the pro gram covers Indian struggles across the U S . and as far away as Central and South America, he said.
