Ph D. in history fro m the University

Rosemarie, he worked full time in the
Soul hern-based Black freedom move­
ment in (he e a rly 1960s, b e fore
becom ing c h a irm a n o f the Depar-
ment o f H is to ry and S ociology at
Spelman College in A tla n ta . G A In
1968 he became director o f the M artin
L u th e r K in g , J r., M e m o ria l Center
a'td the coordinator o f (he nationally
televised CBS " B la c k H e rita g e "
series. H a rd in g was one o f the
organizers o f the In s titu te o f the
Black W orld, and in 1969 became its
first d ire cto r; he is now chairman o f
the Institute's board His previously

Revolution and There Is a River.
This event w ill be held on Sunday,
Jan. 12 at 4:00 p .m . in G e rlin g e r
Lounge, 15th and University, Univer­
sity o f Oregon, Eugene. A reception
w ill immediately follow . Admission is

The Dream and the Drum
In 1961 civil rights leader Dr. M a rtin I uther King gave his most tainous
speech in which he spoke ot a dream — a dream ol Blacks and whiles living
peacefully together, a dream o f international peace, a dream o f freedom and a
dream o f brotherhood. Public television pays tribute to Dr King and his dream
in an hour long program ot poetry, prose and music coinciding with the lirsl
national celebration of Dr King's birth
M a rlin I uther K ing: The Dream and the D rum takes a non tra d itio n a l
approach lo explore Dr King's dream. His struggle for equality and his vision
for a belter society are examined through the writings o l distinguished poets,
lecturers, politicians and authors who shared Dr. King's vision, as well as those
who disagreed with his ideals.
Program hosts Rubs Dee and Ossie Davis, along with actresses M iriam
Colon, Freda Shen, K im Hunter and actor Theodore Bikel read and petform
w orks by G w e n d o lyn B ro o ks, t ountee C u lle n , Sonia Sanchez, I angslon
Hughes, lames Baldw in, A lie» W a lk « , J Edgar H oover, George Wallace,
Malcolm X and others The program iincrwcavcs readings ol poetry, prose and
speeches with the music ol Max Roach and Sweet Honey in the Rock, and in

celerated interest built up in the final
month before the Nation celebrates its
newest holiday and to the widespread
distribution o f pledge cards across the
country, asking ihe public to endorse
the p rin c ip le s
o f peace and
brotherhood o f Dr. King.
In a d d itio n , all except fo u r stales
and Puerto Rico, have taken action to
observe the holiday, either on Jan. 20,
ihe national day o f recognition or on
Dr. K ing's actual birth d a y, Jan. 15.
The m a jo rity o f states have
established stale com m issions to
organize state and local celebrations.
Nations around the w orld w ill also
participate in tribute to Dr. King, who
was recognized in te rn a tio n a lly as a
w o rld leader and N obel laureate
Pledge cards in several languages have
been distributed by the United States
Inform ation Service abroad to further
the observance. A n d the U n ite d
Nations Secretary-General has been
invited to participate in King Week
ceremonies in A tla n ta , the week o f
Jan. I I to 20. M em bers o f the
President’ s Cabinet and members o f
Congress w ill also attend the week's
events
