Public television pays tribute to Dr King and his dream in an hour long program ot poetry, prose and music coinciding with the lirsl national celebration of Dr King's birth M a rlin I uther K ing: The Dream and the D rum takes a non tra d itio n a l approach lo explore Dr King's dream. His struggle for equality and his vision for a belter society are examined through the writings o l distinguished poets, lecturers, politicians and authors who shared Dr. King's vision, as well as those who disagreed with his ideals. M rs. K in g a tirib u tc d the remarkable public response to the ac­ celerated interest built up in the final month before the Nation celebrates its newest holiday and to the widespread distribution o f pledge cards across the country, asking ihe public to endorse the p rin c ip le s o f peace and brotherhood o f Dr. King. In a d d itio n , all except fo u r stales and Puerto Rico, have taken action to observe the holiday, either on Jan. 20, ihe national day o f recognition or on Dr. K ing's actual birth d a y, Jan. 15. The m a jo rity o f states have established stale com m issions to organize state and local celebrations. Nations around the w orld w ill also participate in tribute to Dr. King, who was recognized in te rn a tio n a lly as a w o rld leader and N obel laureate Pledge cards in several languages have been distributed by the United States Inform ation Service abroad to further the observance.
