I he President said, “ I he government ot South A fric a must abandon the inhuman policy of apartheid and reach out tor reconciliation with the c o u n try’ s 24 m illion Blacks. South A fric a ’ s declaration ot a state o f emergency had given its police essentially unlimited powers to silence critics o f the government." I he Chamber ot ( ommerce criticized the government’s handling ot the con tin u in g unrest, and accused the police ot con tributmg to the violence. I tiese statements ot President Reagan and the Chamber o f Commerce are hyptxrisy at its worst. Reagan’s policy ot constructive engagement has not only been a complete failure, but has actuallv strengthened the noose around the necks ot Blacks and people o f mixed races. I hroughout his term as President, Reagan has been an apologist ot the South A frican govern merit. In ta ct, he once remarked that racial segregation had been eliminated in South Africa. Reagan made this statement Aug. 24 while recuperating at his California ranch alter his July 1.1 cancer surgery, l ater tie retracted this statement. President Reagan's executive order which called lo r negligible sanctions against South Africa con tamed many kxrpholes. file order omits the clause threatening stronger sanctions, such as no new in vestment hi one year it apartheid is not being dismantled. name and address (addresses are n o t usualls pu blishe d) Prostitution - here to stay Zo the I-d ilo r In considering (he q u e s tio n o l I here are 1X6 U.S. companies in South Africa which adhere to the Sullivan Code, which guaran tees fa ir labor practices and equal employment opportunities, Companies like General motors and IB M have recently released public statements reaffirming their commitment to remain in South Africa. Apart field is beneficial to many Americans and foreign companies by providing a cheap labor market. P ro fits w ill be greater for those com panics based throughout South Africa. Only by to ta l divestm ent w ill the white minority government ot South Africa give Blacks and others the natural rights given to .ill people: the right to be free. Past history has shown that the world is capable ot letting human atrocities occur tor long periixlx fx’lore something is done. In this country , slavery lasted tor hundreds o f years betoie it was recognized that it was inhumane I lie work! knew about Naz.i Germany , but did nothing to stop Hitler until lie had slaughtered millions o f Jews. I he same situation is ixcurring in South Africa today. I tie Reagan a d m in istra tio n and the American Chamber ot ( ommerce should take fiositivc actions to stop this geiuxide. I his can only be done through total economic sanctions and total divestment. I util the above occurs, the President and the I S companies doing business in South \tn ca are just as guilty as dial oppressive regime.
