Jackson. I heir choice of Rev. Jackson is an a p p ro p ria te one. Jack so n is cu rren tly the minister ol Mt. Olivet Baptist C hurch in Portland Rev. Jackson's commitment to the betterment of the Black community warrants such an honor. Res Ja ck so n has been a strong adv o cate in pro m o tin g p rogram s to serve youths and the Black comm unity. His involvement in education resulted in the recruitment of more Black teachers in the Portland Public Schools. He is also one ol the founders of the P o rtla n d O p p o rtu n ity In dustrial Center (POIC ). the POIC is a facility that provides training for industrial jobs. As a minister in the Albina Ministerial Alliance, Jackson helped to create program s such as the self-enhancerne.it program which prepares student athletes for high school and college. Jackson has also encouraged school dropouts to enter PO IC programs. The im pact o f R everend J a c k s o n ’s work throughout the years in the black community will long be felt by community residents. Naming the building on the C ascade C am pus a fte r Rev. Jackson will insure that future generations of Black Portlanders will know of his dedication to the im provem ent of the social status of Blacks living m the city. The Board of Directors of PCC, in naming the building a fte r Rev. Ja ck so n , recognize his dedication to Black education and job training skills. The B oard of D irectors should be a p plauded for making sure Res. Jackson will never be forgotten in the Portland Black community. EDITORIAL/COMMENTARY Stone P illo w — a sign of the times lo o bad we d id n ’t hear m ore about the CBS television movie Stone Pillow which aired Nos 5. The m ovie may win Lucille Ball an aw ard. It should, because her portrayal of an aging New York City ‘‘bag lady" in the movie was one of the most powerful and empathetic acting jobs to be seen on television in a long time. "It was real,” said a woman who had lived on the street in the Burnside area for two years. flo ra , played by Lucy, once had a nice home on a farm , a husband and children. But unseen econom ic forces (the exact reason is neser ex plained) caused the family to break up and f lora took to the street. Before it was stolen, her shop ping cart was vers important to her because it con tains all of her worldly possessions and because it also contained a photo of her boy. W e are show n realistic scenes o f street s u r vival— flo ra sweet-talking delivery men for a tew vegetables and fighting off thugs; and cops who rap on the grates with their clubs and order the hapless street people to sleep elsewhere. In one powerful sequence, flo ra finds herself alone at night in a b u rn ed -o u t section of Brooklyn. Hiding from thugs behind a wrecked car, an aggressive rat nearly pounces on her. Stone Pillow is a sign of the times, perhaps all the more powerful because of its choice as the role I ucille Ball picked to make her comeback. W ho can forget the lovable, laughable I ucy of / Love I n e y ta m e — the actress housew ife w atched regularly by millions of housewives. I ike flo ra, I ucy also once had a happy home and family. I lei little crises in those good old days are that much more quaint in comparison to the changes in American hie in the 20 sears or so since / wee went olt the an In these dass ol Reaganism and the \m erican dream turned into nightm are lor the poor ami unemployed, it seems almost as it in Slone Pillow I lies is saying, " I ook what can happen to the happiest, m ost secure ol u s ."
