Herbs and Spices
Cleancut. Portland a hottest vocal group, along with the Cleancut
Band, will be appearing at the 8th Ave Club (N W 6th & Burnside, tor
marly Old Town Saloon) on Wednesday, July 31st.
Cleancut consists of four lead vocalists Mary Turner, Richard Greer.
Ronee Walker and Joe (Bean) Keller They, along with a six piece
rhythm section, will be presenting a repertoire of music ranging from
the early 70a on through tha top 40 hits of the 80s. plus a few a cappella
numbers In the past. Cleancut has appeared at the Last Hurrah with
the Calvin Walker Band and just recently concluded a smashing sue
cess at Summer Funk '86 held at Starry Night.
Cleancut a style has been compared with that of the Temptations,
the Four Tops and the Whispers with the only difference being Clean
All Male
Revue
cut s two male and two female vocalists.
Cleancut will be presenting two shows - 10:00 p m and 12 00 mid
night. Cleancut will also be shooting the first phase of their video be
ginning at 10 00 p.m. under the direction of Larry Dunham. BETV direc
tor of Rogers Cable System, and the public is invited to take part Only
those 21 or older will be admitted All ladies will be admitted free,

The Mlaa Ten Scholarship Pageant is now open for entry for the 1986
Miss Ten crown. The Mlaa Tan Pageant started In August 1986 to give
the African women the opportunity to display their beauty, talent and
poise. Although tha format follows tha Mlaa America Pageant. It Is not
a beauty pageant.
Miss Ten Portland Is more than a beauty contest. It is tha showcee
Ing of a specific segment of our greet American society
Tha Black woman la taking her rightful place In tha world of beauty
and fashion. Thia pageant Is only tha starting place ' Tha pageant
gives tha woman of color more confidence, and allows the general
public to become more aware of her tremendous talent and other as­
sets which, until now. have been overshadowed by the Image of racial
taboos
All contestants will receive prlxes. with Mlaa Tan receiving over
«2,000 in cash and prizes.

(lace) Reynolds until she hits the
stage A vocalist since the age of lour,
Mary has expanded her talent to he
come one of the finest lemale RAH
vocalists in the city of Portland
Mary began singing the gospel at
age 4 in a neighborhood church in
Monroe. I ouisiana Being exposed at
such a young age drove her to reash
full potential in the field of music and
business Moving to Oregon didn't
stop her in her continuing search lor
success. At the age of 14 Mary was
considered a professional singer.
Since living in Portland, Mary has
been very active learning and present
ing her talent She has performed with
some of the city’s finest musicians, re­
cently graduating from PCC Cascade,
where she earned a J.4JG .P .A . while
majoring in music.
Besides finding Mary on the music
scene, she can also be seen working in
and around her community She is a
4-H leader and also a volunteer teach
er at the H E C. Black Educational
(. enter and she is a military vet, as
well.
Mars's past performances have
been in establishments such as Digger
O'Dell's, Hobo’s Inn, the World Mu­
sic Festival, ArtQuake and I he Cross­
ing in Vancouver, WA. She is present
ly performing with one ol Portland's
fine musical groups, Billy Rancher's
"Flesh A Blood" (Good luck, Billy,
in your fight with cancer).
Mary has also put together another
group called the Voices ol Grace
Singers, which consist ol her three
trices and one nephew ranging in ages
from five to eight years. The group
perform gospel music.
