This week's U PD A TE with fo od ¡o r thought: " I know Thy works behold. I have
set before thee an open door, and no m in a n shut it: fo r thou has a little strength,

P o rten d Reieeeed-dm e Educator Aancaetor (PREP) began in 1984 when
Laune Dodge. • oonoamad school board member formerly of Lane County, sought
out an "open door" to teach the BWa. Laurie "approached Portends euperirwen-

provided with daaeee in Northeast Portend
The Prep Committee would Bee to say "Thank-you" to the churches who have
opened thee doors to teach the BWe to students who would undoutxecty have no

Extension Agent, succumbed to a
heart attack ending a life-long career
of support to urban youth and senior
citizens.
M um ford, 65, was recently involved
in a radio show called “ Gospel
T rain ,” which was a highlight o f his
Arts and Communication class where
urban youngsters received hands-on
experience in radio production.
In January 1985, M um ford said in
an interview, “ Urban 4-H has had a
positive effect on kids. Children who
were in the program years ago have
children o f their own who are in the
program today. I ’m proud to be a
part o f that.”
During Dr. M artin Luther King’s
Birthday
celebrations,
M um ford
helped popularize King’s, “ I ’ve been
to the mountain top” speech. A Navy
veteran, M um ford also related expe

In his office at the King Neighbor

During the 5th annual March
Against Racism, Ronnie Herndon,
co-chair o f the Black United Front,
dedicated a portion o f the march to
M um ford. “ He was one who did
things behind the scenes to make sure
those out front were covered.”
A cloud of sadness descended over
Albina as word spread of our loss.
Many will remember M um ford for
his sense o f humor and down-to-earth
