Roberts has led the fight against drug abuse for eight years and was re cently cited by M ayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles, California, for his work as a celebrity helping young people get o ff drugs by destroying the myth that drug use is cool. Roberts’ first major television role was "R ooster," an inform ant/ pimp on the T .V . scries, "B arctta." In an interview, Roberts said the M r. Arrechia character was a radical de parture from Rtxrstcr. "T he money’s better, too. It just blows away the myth that Afro- Americans can’t speak English. We are a versatile people." Roberts added that (he movie and entertainment industry has failed to recognize the diversity o f Black actors and actresses. "W e go beyond the stereotyping. We are a melting pot. I don’t think the Afro-American has anything to worry about. A ll we need is some good P R The top entertain ers on the planet are Afro-Am erican. So, slay in there and keep trying," he said. Roberts added that he supported the cultural boycott against South Africa. "Even though artists can make a statement, we have to take a stand. I would not perform for Hitler and I don’t see much difference be tween the tw o .” Roberts studied drama in high school in Los Angeles and later at the California School o f Performing Arts. He starred in "Ice Pirates," for which he was nominated for a 1984 N A A C P Black Image Award. His versatility as an actor and re fusal to be type-cast is matched only by his genuine concern to provide role models for today’s youth to en able them to live a better life. > 284-6106 Portland,' O regon Citizens' Groups for the m onth of April present the Steple Bros .
