Feb. 2. 1979 at Boston Hagler moved into world title contention with a devastating first round knock out o f highly regarded Sugar Ray Seales, the former Olympic champion Nov 30. 1979 at Lea Vegas - Hagler finally gets his kvrig-awaited title shot and lets it slip away. He dominates the early stages o f his fight against de fending champion Vito Anluefermci but seems to falter in the later rounds. Though most ringside observers have Hagler ahead, the fight is ruled a draw and Antuofermo retains his title. April 20. 1980 at Portland. Maine — Marching toward another title shot, Hagler avenges one o f his two career losses by knocking out Bobby Walts in just two rounds. Watts had scored a 10-round decision over Hagler in Jan uary, 1976. Hagler earlier avenged his other career loss, a 10-round defeat by W illie Monroe, also with a second- round knockout. Sept. 27, 1980 at London — The title finally belongs to Hagler. He un leashes a blistering two-fisted attack Opan: 8:00 - 6:30 407 N.E. He opens severe cuts around both o f Antuofernto’s eyes and the fight is stopped in the fifth round. Feb 11. 1983 at Worcester. Mess -T h e re are many who feel that rug ged Tony Sibson o f Britain has the style to beat Hagler. Hagler proves them wrong as he opens a deep gash above Sibson's eye and hammers him with a combination o f blows until the fight is stopped in the sixth round. Hagler, a heavy favorite, gets caught up in a tactical fight with the wily Duran and is near ly upset. Hagler goes down for the first time in his career in the first round, although the call is highly question able, and finally puts away the rugged challenger in the 10th round mgs but he use* his first appearance at Madison Square Garden to show that he is still the same marvelous lighting machine. Hagler wins his 10th title defense by knocking out nuntbet one ranked Mustafa Hamsho in the thud round. Ewing, 22, was proclaimed recipi ent o f the award at a press gathering at the famed “ 2I C lu b ." The award is given each year to the top male col legiate basketball player as selected by the National Association o f Bas ketball player as selected by the Na tional Association o f Basketball Coaches (N ABC ).
