Army Sergeant Bienvenue Theo dore, seized in 1979, is believed to be still imprisoned without charge or tnal after rebuking a soldier who said he wanted to shoot strikers during a la bor dispute. Sergeant Theodore was reportedly accused o f being a traitor and plotting against the government. Amnesty International said that unce its report was written, it had learned o f more arrests, including people who took part in church-run projects to help the poor. It received reports o f at least 25 arrests in No vember 1984, including experts work ing on rural development projects and a Protestant minister seized on his return from the USA . The govern ment has released few details on these arrests, most o f which are believed to be for non-violent activity. Volunteers needed to help elderly Project Linkage, a non-profit neigh borhood-based organization, is seek ing volunteers who are willing to pro vide assistance to our elderly neigh bors in Northeast Portland. Current volunteer needs include friendly visiting to the lonely, respite tare, housekeeping assistance and transportation. Some o f these needs require an on-going volunteer com mitment and others are only one time or short term. As little as four hours a month is all that is necessary to become a full fledged Project Linkage volunteer. On Tuesday, March 26, from 7 to 9 p.m ., an orientation for new volun teers and anyone considering volun teering, will be conducted by the Proj ect Linkage staff. The orientation will be held in our office located at 2200 N .E . 24th Avenue The evening will provide interested individuals with the opportunity to acquaint themselves with Project Linkage through a slide show, lecture, dis cussion and sharing with active vol unteers. Projects to be undertaken include exterior and interior signs, logos, bro chures, banners, carved wooden signs and photographic slide documentation Artists are asked to submit a resume and optional proposal, which will be compiled by the Arts Commission and made available to the area offices, who will interview and select artists for their projects. A budget o f $1,000 is available for each project; deadline for applica tions is April 5. 1985.
