The church has installed a free phone It's available for kxal calls only in the church lobby, at 126 N .E . A l berta, during business hours Monday through Friday. Kev. Douglas W irt said M a llo ry has made a phone available for neigh- borhood residents for several years. With the help of t w o grants, the church installed a business line for neighbor hood use in August. Il costs about $50 per month. “ In a sense, it's the neighbor hood’s idea,” he said, because more people fro m the neighborhood had found themselves unable Io afford a home phone and were coming to M a l lory lo make iheir calls. When fam ilies must choose between lights, water, heal and phone, “ Usually (he phone is the first one to g o ,” said W irt. But a phone is nevertheless a social necessity, he continued People need a phone “ to make sure grandma is all rig h t,” to call landlords, utilities, social service agencies and to make jo b contacts. For some employers, said W irt, " I f you don’t have a tele phone num ber to give them , you don't get the jo b .” The free phone has actually helped neighborhood residents gel jobs, he added. About 75 calls per week are made with the phone. No problems threat en continuance o f the service, said W irt, m ainly because the phone is programm ed not to allow long dis tance calls. “ People have been really good about regulating the length of their calls, also,” he said, “ except for a couple o f kids that really like to talk to iheir friends forever and ever. We have good neighbors.” The free phone was publicized widely in the beginning, and even made it on CBS News. A $2,000 grant from the Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust and a $5,000 grant from a North Portland woman donated in memory o f her husband and son who were killed by a drunk d river, made the free phone possible. "A s rates go up, we think we are going to see a lot more use o f this pho n e,” sid W ir t, who added that volunteers are neded to sta ff the phone and make sure it isn't abused.
