Portland Obaerver, February 13, 1986, Page 9 — SPORT TALK • SPORT TALK Canadian takes over reins at Portland Meadows B uford M ills , J r., a 20-year-old reinsman with strong Exhibition Park connections, is the new riding leader at Portland Meadows fo llo w in g the departure to Golden Gate o f fro n t runner Jody Davidson. M ills, who had a highly successful season at the Vancouver, B.C ., track last season, has booled home 38 w in ners during the first 54 days o f the 99- day PM meet. He is actually one be hind D avidson's standings-topping number o f 39, but the 22-year-old Davidson is now toiling in San Fran cisco where his younger brother, Kevin, 17, is m aking a name as a promising apprentice rider. W ith any success this week, M ills should pass the departed Davidson on the standings, but young Buford faces Good seats still available for Breakers strong com petition fo r the top spot from 22-year-old C a lifo rn ia n Brian Long, w ho currently counts 32 w in ners. Long, who came to Portland after winning meets in Regina and Marquis Downs in Western Canada, has moved steadily up the standings. Also on the upward clim b are young riders Doug Moore, 26 wins, and Frank Gonsalves, 25 wins. A total o f 13,500 season tickets have been sold for the upcoming Portland Breaker football season, according to Jack G alm iche, vice president and marketing director for the USFL fran chise. However, the team’ s early suc cess with ticket sales seems to he work ing against the club. "There's a misconception that all o f the good seals have been sold, that there are no more covered seats le ft,” said G alm iche. " A c tu a lly we have nearly eight-thousand covered seats in the north end o f the stadium. And in a stadium the size o f Civic, there really are no bad seats." A rush on season tickets sales in November and early December pushed the Breakers' total to 10,000. The pub licity which followed the early rush left many fans thinking that all the good tickets had been purchased. “ We have some great scats for sale, ; probably as grxrd as any in the house as far as I ’ m concerned,” said Head Coach Dick C o u ry. " I personally enjoy being up high at either end o f the field — it offers a number o f advan tages. A fan in the north end bleachers gets to see the offensive linemen open ing holes for runningbacks. the defen sive backs m oving in to their cover ages, and this kind o f thing." APPROX. 5-P0UN0 Pkg.
