Ford was reluctant to p inpoint the change in classroom education, "B u t the teacher today has a p ro b lem I did not have — drugs. This has created a different situation.” Ford also felt there was too much sex on television during prime time. "This represents a change in the atti tude o f teachers and adults. F o rd , O reg o n 's first Black secondary and elem entary teacher, organized and dedicated a portion o f the King N eig h bo rh o od fa c ility to The Poriland School District and K O IN -T V (Channel 6) launch a new weekly m ag azin e-fo rm at program beginning Jan. 20. Called " S C H O O L R E E L ,’ ’ the 30- m inute, 13-weck series w ill feature education and community story seg ments on Sundays at 4:30 p.m. Reporting and anchor duties are handled by 12 Portland public high school and m iddle school students selected a fte r auditions involving more than 300 applicants. W HIPS AN D WAVES « 4 3 N.E. Union by Lam ia Duke Ford, hired by the Portland Public School district, spent 26 years teach ing in Holladay, Eliot and Roosevelt High School. His students said Ford instilled in them those intangible ele ments called p rid e , self-w o rth and character. Tom Mason, a Portland area busi ness man and a former student, said, "Ford left us with a feel that we were someone. H e never let you believe that you c o u ld n 't accom plish or achieve certain things. You might be poor or in some other way u nd er privileged. But i f you pul fo rth an e ffo rt you can achieve your goals. You just can't learn that in a book." Reading (he in s crip tio n , Peggy White said, " W e , his former students, thank M r . Ford fo r his inspiration and many of the basic things he taught us — a sense o f pride." T h e wing at the King N e ig h b o r hood Facility is just a chapter in the book o f appreciation his former stu dents have written praising their fo r mer instructor. Last year a dance o f ap p reciation drew m ore than 400 fo rm e r students and w ell-w ishers. "T h e reason we care so much about him is because he cared so much for his students,” Mason added. Originally, Ford's students wanted a park named after him , but after a consultation w ith fo rm er C om m is sioner Charles Jordan, the students adopted the suggestion to have a building named for Ford.
