Killingsworth _ L j Corner caterer offers hottest hot tómales Ay Robert Lothian Ed Dines* camper is small but full io the ro o f with the big smell o f his hot tomales. Dines has been selling his tomales from a pickup-mounted camper at the corner o f 15th and Killingsworth for seven years. He owns the lot, also the house next door w hich he rents to tenants who let him run an electric cord to his camper. “ You can't do too many things and master it,** said Dines, $4, a retired Publisher's Paper C o. employee. In ad d itio n to his tom ales he o ffers a special limited edition sausage sand wich. H e hopes to expand in to a house trailer on the lot soon when the papers and negotiations with the city arc com plete, and o ffe r rib sand wiches. He wants to have a drive-up w in dow in the trailer so that customers “ can get their s tu ff and keep step- pin’ ,** he said. But with $200 for the plans required by the city alone, and as many licenses as any restaurant, Dines wonders if “ they don’t want me here, I'm so little. T h a t’ s how they keep a poor person down. They never give you any breaks, they never gave me any.” FOR ALL YOUR PRINTING NEEDS Ortica b Bualnaaa Latterhaada • Bualnaaa Carda Bulletins • Prlca U sta • Charta N ew alattara • Forma • Flyara Envalopaa • ADS PLACED him from Louisiana about 23 years ago. His customers are cab drivers, ambulance drivers, police and doc tors. "J u s t about anybody comes by here from time to tim e," he said. Eddie D ra y e r, w ho lives in St. Johns, has dropped by about once a week for three years. “ I ’ve got a taste for 'em ,” said Drayer. “ I usually get ’em on my way to w ork. You can't beat the seasoning.” D ray er said even his three- and four-year-old chil dren go for the tomales. Dines retired from Publisher's with a disbility “ a long time ago,** he said. “ M y bones just wore out from work ing hard all my life. His worklife started out pushing a cart along railroad tracks in Louisi ana, collecting scrap metal. He brought his tomale recipe with W hile his sm all business doesn’ t make him a lot of money. Dines said it docs keep him busy and talking with the public, something he obviously enjoys.
