The Fred Meyer Far West Clas sic T ip -O ff Luncheon introduced all eight head coaches and the to u rn a ment was underway. G overnor Vic A liych and fo rm e r M a y o r Frank Ivancie were in attendance and seated at the head table. Head Coach Ralph M iller of OSU was the first to speak as the comic procession began. Coach M iller has a very arid sense o f hum or but he seemed to enjoy what he had to say. M ille r explained that his team had recently arrived from H aw aii and it was the first time in history that the host school traveled farthest to reach their own to urnam en t. Penn Head Coach, Craig L ittle page, fo l lowed and explained his team's 0-3 start. Littlepage, the only black head coach in the field, explained that his team has six players that are paying their own way through school. Boyd G rant, head man at Fresno State, quipped, " I try to pattern our tournament after the Far West Clas sic, you know ; the host school a l ways gets to the finals.'* Jack Avina o f Po rtlan d confessed, " I ' m not a good coach, but I am humble.” Dick Kuchen of California was just glad to he here. Coach Bobby Hussey of Davidson took all the fun out o f my day when he jokingly proclaim ed, " T h e re ’s a correlation between the S A T scores and the vertical jum p, the higher the S A T score, the low er the ju m p .” M ayor Ivancie found the statement very amusing and Gov. Atiyeh looked directly into my eyes for a reaction. Davidson finished last in the tourna ment I Don Monson was the last speaker and the funniest. He quickly observed that, " I t 's easy to spot the Beavers that are am ong the press, they all flash their class ring w hile picking their noses." I f success is measured by hard work and thorough preparation this Classic ranks right up there with the best in the country All o f the people behind the scenes deserve praise for a jo b well done. T he selection com mittee can't possibly predict the qual ity o f individual teams because the schedule is made up years in advance o f play so I w o n 't b ad -m o uth this year's field of participants. The cham pionship game looked like a piece o f cake for O SU at h alf time. The Orange Express led by as many as 14 points in the first half on the way to its 13th Far West Classic championship, but they almost let Cal back into the game in the second half. A l one stretch during the third period Billy jumped up to protest one o f the many terrible calls and ripped the seat o f his pants. The fans gave him all sorts o f trouble and laughter but Billy had the last laugh. I grew up with Billy and watching him handle this team up dose was fantastic. Inside of 5:00 Bil ly saved his team a crucial turnover. Moses was trying to rebound the ball but was running out o f time and that pained look o f anguish crossed his face, the Philly bench began to holler ai Moses to get the ball in and Billy calm ly hollered tim e-o u t fro m the bench and the referee blew the whis tle. Time-outs can't be called from the bench but the referee missed that and Philly saved a critical turnover. It's an old move Ibut it still works. M o s t V alu ab le Player A w a rd A. C. Green. OSU Mose« Malone full grown 13 points in each half. The Bears were not even in the game in the first half as A. C. started quickly and OSU ran up a 16-3 lead as C al went scoreless for 6:13. The h alftim e score read 27 -I9 O S U . The second half was much better for the Bears when guards, C hris W ashington and Kevin Johnson warmed to their tasks. This duo com bined fo r 2 1-second h a lf points. When the clock hit 11:48 in the game, Cals guard tandem had the game deadlocked at 36-36. Leonard Taylor, a freshman forward for Cal, showed no respect for the Beavers and went on a tear that O SU couldn't handle bul some pretty gtxid coaching moves by M iller and a 3-point play by Green with 1:34 left took the air out o f the Bears' bubble. C a lifo rn ia proved that they w ill have to be reckoned with when the conference schedule be gins. OSU went on and posted the win 70-39 but the game was much closer than the score indicates. A . C . Green led the scorers with 26 points and his 9 rebounds were second only to Steve Woodside's I I . Leonard Taylo r led the Bears with 22 points and Kevin Johnson followed with 16.
