The Bushman tribes o f Botswana, fo r instance, whose nom adic and peaceful lifestyle is threatened by drought and encroaching civilization, contribute baskets. Also available in Portland are lions, giraffes and ele phants hand carved out o f muhuhu wood from Kenya, and baskets from Lesotho. «a There's also needlework and olive wood carvings from Palestinian refu gees, wheal straw cards from Bangla desh, Ind ian brass and wood carv ings, G u a tem a lan textiles, baskets from the Philippines, even wooden toys and stuffed animals from A ppa lachia. "Everything here is made by a rti sans in those countries,” said Bruce H a rd er, a member o f the Portland Mennonite Church and co-founder of the store with his w ife Kathy. " N o body is sitting in a sweatship with 400 r e o p le ." the store was founded in 9 8 1 with S I,000 in seed money do nated by ten families who attend the chutch, said Harder. Kathy H a rd e r, manager o f the store and secretary o f the church, said that each item carries w ith it a story. The wheat straw cards fro m Bangladesh, fo r instance, she said, are made by young girls try in g to bring some income into their families so their fathers w on 't try to m arry them o ff too soon, she said. Each item is unique. You won't be able to purchase an exact duplicate of something purchased at the store last year. " W e had some carved ze bras, and I was so sure one was preg nant that I thought it was two for the price of one," she said. T heir push for next year is to get more things fro m G u a tem a la and Central Am erica, where M ennonite outreach w orkers are active. “ The M ennonites are one o f the original peace churches," said Bruce Harder. “ The Mennonites are not pro or con, either for or against the government for the guerillas, which puts them in a very d ifficu lt position sometimes. W e’re for peace.” West coast Mennonite churches are also very actively sending aid to Ethiopia, amounting to about 7,000 tons of food in I984, he said, the local congregation raised about $2,000 for Ethiopia al Thanksgiving, he added. 2 2 6 -1 5 0 7 § £ £ £ I A series o f clascs will be offered at The G ro tto , The National Sanctuary o f O ur Sorrowful M other, beginning in January, 1983.
