When I sec a program like the Peninsula W restling C lu b needing sponsors and not getting them, it ticks me o ff. I grew up in New York City so maybe I ’m spoiled, but I firm ly believe that professional athletes should be a large part o f the local athletic com m unity. These young wrestlers are good kids and some o f you Blazers should help. Sweetwater Clifton, of the old New York Knicks, sponsored everything from handball teams to cheerleaders with a lot less salary than our beloved TrailBlazers. Jerome Kersey, Bernard Thompson and Steve Colter have already men tioned to me that they intend to be come a part o f w hat's needed in A l bina, so fellas this is not directed at you. Sam Bowie suited up for this one and had some significant m inutes, 27 to be exact. Kenny C a rr has gotten into playing condition and it won’t be long before we see some sterling play from Kenny. Portland had this one wire to wire because Jack used his bench to per fection. W hen D r. Jack inserted Je rome Kersey into the game in the third quarter Portlan d was leading 86-79 w ith 5:25 left; when Kersey came out in the fo urth period the score read 115-100. Steve Colter final ly got some tim e and responded like a veteran as he continually found the Grant Generals unveils varsity open man and played some tough defense. Speaking of defense.. . Port land needs some. Whenever Portland called out a play the defense seemed to know the plays as well as the Blaz ers. T o rrid shooting was the d iffe r ence on this night. Portland has been running the same offensive patterns so long it's almost comical watching the defense beat them to their spots. Coach T o m M cK enna has the girls’ varsity ready to play some tough defense i f Wednesday night's per formance is indicative o f what prac tice has been like. G uards Bridget Sm ith and M a rio D ishm an w ill be fo rm id ab le but the fro n t line w ill have to w ork hard i f G ra n t is to be successful this season. Senior Kristin Kjensrud seems to have a knack for finding good shooting position o ff the ball but needs to hit that open shot more consistently. Coach John S tilw ell w ill be hard pressed to defend his P IL champion ship o f last year but he has the tools to pull it o ff. G uard T on y Ross is a junior who plays like a collegian and he should lead this team well, the in side outside combination o f Ross and M ark West w ill be tough to defend. • Ross sees the entire floor and he han dles the pill with ease and confidence. The team is loaded with leapers and if Stilwell keeps control, the Generals w ill provide some exciting moments this season. Avezzano out at OSU H ead C o ach Joe A vezzan o has been fired by O regon State U n iv e r sity. Joe’ s record over the last five years is 6-47-2. I f my memory serves me correctly that should qualify Joe for the job as Athletic Director. Dee Andros didn't do much better and got the jo b . Joe. In the last 15 years the Beaver record is 33-130-3, only five of those yeai are Joe's. 1975 was A n dros' last r .ason and he was 1-10. Coaching isn't the problem gentle men. you must release the purse strings and hire some assistants who can recruit. W ith 1:28 in the game Jack pulled Clyde and inserted Valentine into the lineup and the game looked all but over for the Trail- Blazers. Trailing 102-98 with 17 sec onds on the clock, C lyde was back and ready for his brand of mayhem. Vandeweghe hit a jum per from the top o f the key on a pass from Pax that took just three beats on the clock. The Nets inbounded to Michael Ray and with eight seconds to go Clyde went into his act. Solid defensive position enabled Clyde to make the steal and suddenly he was headed for the hole. Before he could get the shot o ff, Otis Birdsong lowered the ham mer and Clyde was heading for the line and opportunity. W ith four sec onds left in the game Clyde had Port land back in it as he made both foul shots. The Nets blew the last shot and we were in overtime. Clyde gave New Jersey more o f the same in over time and Portland never looked back. M ychal Thom pson had a strong game scoring 26 points and grabbing eleven rebounds. Column 6/ W hen actually lig h tin g the fire , make certain that the damper is in an open position. Tightly crumble sever al sheets o f newspaper, and place these where they w ill set fire to k in dling, which will in turn ignite larger logs. D on’t set fire to newspaper and then place it on the logs; use a long fireplace match to ignite paper a l ready under the logs. And be careful to keep long sleeves and skirts away from the flames. I f you choose to use artificial logs, follow the instructions on the package, and remember not to mix real and artificial logs in the fire b > *• place. Once the fire has begun, make sure that the fire screen, which covers the entire front o f the fireplace, is in place. This w ill prevent dangerous flying sparks.
