I'm convinced that all (he participants will be win iters, also For some years now I have tu tored many o f our com m unities’ girls and boys that p articipate in varsity basketball and the one sim ila rity that I have recognized has been the inability to deal with ath letic fa ilu re . M any parents have asked me to comfort their sons and (laughters who had made a bad play or missed the gam e-winning free throw or fumbled the ball that cost their team the game. Some o f the kids themselves have asked if they should quit because they let their team down or because they weren’t performing up to their expectations of themselves. M y only response is to point out the unfortunate numbers o f people who lay helpless because o f an in jury sustained during athletic com petition. When you’ re not satisfied w ith your perform ance or can’ t seem to digest that tough loss, think o f the athletes you're personally fa m ilia r w ith that can ’ t compete because of a disabling injury. When the game is over and you’ ve come through it with your health, you’ve won, no m atter how te rrib ly you rate your performance. Remember, you w ill have another chance and another time to improve, and above aH else, you will still be healthy. I t ’ s im perative not to get so in volved in your personal goals, av erages or championships that you lose sight o f the place sports hold in your life as a whole. When the game is over and you have done your best, be appreciative of your talents and grateful for every chance to display them. While you are warming up before the game take a moment to feel the strength in your heart and limbs, feel the sweat on your body and the pride in your a b ility.
