C h u rc h in N ortheast P o rtlan d last Sunday by members o f the Oregon Association o f C olored W om en ’ s Clubs. A b o ut th ree h u n d red persons cro w d ed the church a u d ito riu m to hear the "h o m ec o m in g ” program prepared by Shrivers, who lives now in O o l- o rad o Springs but w ho grew up in Portland. Peggy Shriver, the daugh ter o f L ir le a n C ash A n d e rs o n , g ra d u a te d fro m J e ffe rs o n H ig h School and attended Portland State U n iv e rs ity b e fo re she m o ved to San F ra n c is c o . L a te r she w ent a b ro a d to stu d y an d d e v e lo p her career as a c o n ce rt s o lo is t. A d vanced studies w ere tak en at B all State U n iv e rs ity in In d ia n a where she earn ed a M a s te r ’ s degree in Outdance and Counselling. The first h a lf o f Shiver's program showcased her v irtu o s ity . She opened w ith C a re selve fro m the o pera " A t l a n t a " by O eo rg e H a n del, and a selection fro m the opera " A r ia n a ,” by C laudio Monteverde. She had spent ten years o f her life studying and perform ing in M a d rid alo n g w ith her h usband , C laren ce Shivers, a w ell-know n artist. Peggy counts this part o f her life , spent at Escuela S u perior de C a n to , a con s e rv a to ry fo r singers, as h ig h ly memorable in a career studded with high points. Some o f the high points inclu d ed her becom ing a fe a tu re d her program. The songs o f the second h alf were songs held d ear to th e P o rtla n d co m m u n ity o f the s o lo is t’ s young life — her " e x te n d e d f a m il y " as S h rive rs, in her re m a rks fro m the stage, identified this audience. Some o f the song titles could be found in a church h ym n al, but Peggy S h riv ers selected ra re ly h eard a rra n g e ments by N o a h R yder and by H a ll Jo h nson . These re q u ire d an u n usual voice range in the upper regis ter, such as her own. Peggy's mother. perform er during the U nited States Bicentennial celebration in M a d rid and being presented in "c o n ce rt at the U n ite d States C u ltu r a l C e n te r u n d er the auspices o f th e U n ite d States Embassy there.” Songs by E n riqu e G ranados and Joaquin R odrigo appearing on her program m arked this enjoyable pe riod in the singer’ s life . H e r reper to ire inclu d es songs in It a lia n , F ren ch and the O e rm a n L eid e r as well as Spanish. F o r th is h o m e to w n a u d ie n c e, Shivers selected a n u m b e r fro m G eo rg e G e rs h w in ’ s " P o r g y and Bess," and followed it with " I Love You, P o rg y," as an encore from the same operetta. C han g in g song style a fte r in te r mission, Shivers also changed from the white evening gown worn in the first h a lf to simple black and gold striped caftan for the second h alf o f The closing hym n, "B a ttle H ym n o f the R epublic," arranged by Peter W ilh o u s k y , dem and ed the higher reaches o f superb ly ric tones to which Peggy Shrivers proved equal. Shrivers' voice ascended with melo dious and exquisite east to the " D " note b eyo n d " h ig h C . " I t was a m e m o ra b le and e x c itin g p e rfo rm ance. A c c o m p a n is t was M a rg a re t M o o re , an accom plished P o rtla n d concert pianist in her own right. Greetings and floral tributes were offered to the soloist by O brie Smith on behalf o f the Skanncr newspaper and by the Portland chapter o f Peg gy’ s so ro rity, A lp h a Kappa A lp h a .
