Self-esteem Subject of Talk
Dr. Jennifer James, a national
recognued speaker and psychologist.
w4l lecture on "Criticism and Self-
Esteem" at Oregon Episcopal School
October 17, at 7:30 p.m.
A Doctor of Cultural Anthropology,
Dr James was a full time faculty
member in the Psychiatry Department
at the University of Washington until
1962.
Dr. James has followed her
growing interest in community service
since leaving the university. Currently,
she gives lectures, writes a weekly
column for the Seattle Timee and is a
commentator on KIRO, a Seattle
rad» and T .V . station. She also
founded the Committee for Children,
a child advocacy group and is Direc­
tor of the Seattle Community Service
Committee, which helps individuate
contribute to their community.

Annual Choral Competition
The first annual N W Choral Com­
petition is scheduled to take piece on
Nov. 17, 1984 and w(N ba held in the
Georgia Pacific Room of the Memor­
ial Coliseum This is the first event of
its kind to take place in Portland, Ore­
gon, and with your participation it can
be an annual event. If you have a

"The Challenge of Divorce,'* a
three aeaaron senes of workshops wtH
be held at The Grotto, The Sanctuary

The workshops are designed to

periencing a divorce. Speakers from

Peace With Justice Eyed
A peace movement that does not
include demands for justice was
portrayed as unacceptable by three
m ajor speakers at a national
meeting of United Church o f Christ
women.
Black women played a substantial
role in the meeting's planning and
program. Coordinator of the evenl
was C heryl C ram er o f Tulsa,
Oklahom a, and moderator was the
Rev. Yvonne Beasley, pastor of First
United Church o f Christ in Kings
Mountain. North Carolina. A tto r­
ney and civil rights leader Billie Jean
Young o f Jackson, Mississippi,
delivered the meeting's keynote ad­
dress.
Other Black plenary speakers in­
cluded Helen I. Barnhill, president
of Barnhill-Hayes in Milwaukee; the
Rev. Dr Yvonne V. Delk, executive
director of the United Church’s O f­
fice for Church in Society, and Lark
Gallow ay-Gilliam , executive direc­
tor o f A D E P T in Los Angeles.
Minorities comprised 254 or 15%
of the estimated 1,696 full meeting

the Rev. Dr. Avery D. Post, Ards-
ley-on-H udson, New Y o rk , pre­
sident o f the U nited Church o f
Christ, told participants in the four-
day gathering. "Negotiating a mid­
dle ground is impossible for the true
Christian."

M aryland, confessed her fear that
the peace movement's sole focus on
disarmament "is taking away from
a focus on justice."
