Young, President of NACBA Tw o churches of Portland’s Black c o m m u n ity are a n tic ip a tin g the opening o f re g io n a l conferences during the week beginning August 6 th . B oth are expected to hold sessions each day o f the week and each w ill bring conference sessions to a close on Sunday, August 12th. Both are Methodist Episcopal chur ches. M inisters say the plans were made separately and the coincidence was just th at — a co incidence fo r their congregations. The Rev. Matthew W atley, pastor o f Bethel A fric a n M e th o d is t Episcopal C h u rch and his congregation, will hold the Seventh A n n u a l co nference o f the Puget Sound Conference o f Churches, the smallest conference o f the A M .E . F ifth E p isco p al D is tric t. T h e R t. Rev. H e n ry W . M u rp h o f Los Angeles w ill be presiding bishop. Delegates are expected fro m W ashington, Oregon, Idaho, M o n tana and from Anchorage and Fair banks, Alaska. The Rev. Jewell B De W itty, presiding elder of Seattle, will assist Bishop M urph. A ll co n ference sessions w ill be held at Bethel A M .E . C h u rc h at Jarrett St. A w elcom ing banquet, how ever, w ill be held at the Red Lion at Jantzen Beach on Tuesday evening, August 7th. A t Allen Temple o f the Christian M eth o d ist Episcopal C h u rc h , the Rev. E .J . E d w ard s and his congregation w ill host the Alaska P a c ific Annual C o n fere n c e, opening at church headquarters on August 7th. The Rt. Rev. Nathaniel L. Roy Edward Clay, a member and deacon o f the New Jerusalem M issio n a ry B aptist C h u rc h , ex pressed to his pastor his call to preach several months ago Brother Clay stated th at, “ I have felt that God has been w orking with me or callin g me fo r a long tim e; and I th in k it is tim e that I answer his call." When asked “ W hy he wanted to preach," Brother Clay stated, " I see the problem s going on around us— p ro blem s in the w orld and problem s in the church — and the many people who seem lo s t." B roth er C la y was b orn in F o r dyce, A rka n s as on Janu ary 30, 1944 H is fa m ily m oved to P o rt land, O reg o n, when he was I year old. He attended school in the Port land area, where he graduated from Jefferso n H ig h S ch o ol. H e is married to Lottie Clay and has three children— all girls. He became a member of the M orn ing Star B aptist C h u rc h in 1979. There he sung in the choir and served as president o f the B ro th erh o o d Auxiliary.
