And P o rtla n d ’ s Fourth Annual Hobo Parade was no different: it was a parade. Bui! underneath the hoopla, the Fourth Annual Hobo Parade last Sunday, was in a category by itself. The hoopla and fanfare o f the media was there: flash bulbs popped and shutters clicked and motors ground images onto celluloid strips. Mies recorded sounds and pens and pencils raced across paper, preser ving words too precious to be lost to oblivion. One hundred men and women paraded in blue, pink, and green tuxedoes, and, Ihere were banners and floats, too: The West Women Hotel, Baloney Joes, Sisters of the Road C afe, Sunflower Recycling, Portland Limosine Service. Inc., and the Friends of Washington Park Zoo, were among the floats and banner bearers who were led by the Ebony Ivory Strutters D rill Team and the Jazzmin Marching Band. The parade wound through Old Town in gaia fashion; eliciting cheers and applause from neigh bors, friends, and an occassional sightseer bedazzled by the spec tacular affair. •‘ Register the Homeless and the Unemployed to V o te ,” was the theme o f the rally follow ing the parade at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Seventy-five-year old Ben Saxe, this year's king o f the hobos, was called on to speak and the first thing he said was. ‘ ‘Anybody got a jug!” And who could forget Queen Bren da K. Mays saying, " I don’t know what to say! I ’ve been (living in the Burnside Community) a long time.” Twelve-year old Princess E li zabeth S. Then there were the unsung, the ones who unselfishly gave of their time; the ones who went unmen tioned; the ones whose floats or deeds signified a devotion toward the betterment of mankind. Northeast farmers market opens The Farmers’ Market opened its second season on Saturday, July 28th, at its site on N. Williams, be tween Knott and Graham Streets, just south o f Emanuel Hospital. The m arket w ill be open every Saturday morning until about I p.m. from now until October. The purpose of the market is to bring fresh local produce into the city making it available to individuals on a low- or fixed-incom e as well as those who do canning. The market organizers also hope to see it as an outlet for urban gardeners and as a direct selling location for regional , farmers and orchardists. Food stamps are accepted.
