Troy Smith was a resident of W arm Springs Indian Reservation and an allstar athlete who was killed in an au to m o b ile accid en t. Entitled “ K erm it's Kare for Kids” Cam paign, this state wide project is co-sponsored by Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Portland, who has produced 30,000 special Pepsi Can Collection "Banks” ; Far West Federal Banks and Round Table Pizza Restaurants, who will serve as distribution sites for the collection banks; and Safeway Stores, who w ill have donation displays in all of their stores. IP .— Portland will strut its stuff for peace this Saturday, June 2nd, in the First annual Give Peace a Dance marathon for world peace Coordinator Elaine Kelley said the concept of a dance marathon developed in I9 8 3 , in Seattle, Washington, and was very suc cessful in raising money for organizations. " T h is year, the money from pledges will go to our four sponsoring organizations: American Friends Service Commit tee, Oregon Freeze N etw ork, Fellowship of Reconciliation and Portland State University Peace Research Program.” Individuals participating in this 30-hour dance marathon will have a pledge for every step that’s made. Team dancing will also occur where team members will be able to take turns on the dance floor to compete for the 30-hour endurance record Registration begins at the Pine Street Theatre, S.E. 9th and Pine, Friday, June 1st througn June 2nd. Registered marathon dancers will be given free admission, food and drink. The entertainment schedule covers the entire spectrum o f musical taste From a Michael Jackson lip sync, to Vitamix and the Rose City Breakers to Rhythm and Blues group— Street Music. Kelley said there is something for everyone. Kelley arrested concerns that a peace posture w ill make America weak. " In my opinion, aggression is not the answer We must find alter natives to violence. There are other ways to reconcile differences be tween nations, people and races." The organizers adopted the theme, “ Give Peace a Dance" from John Lennon’s “ Give peace a Chance” song.
