Jean Mersey flashes a broad smile
and a warm glance as she sits behind
her desk at Bess Kaiser M e d ic a l
C e n te r w here she is Personnel
Assistant.
A native o f Arkansas, Jean came
to P o rtla n d as a young c h ild . She
completed high school at Jefferson
and attended Portland State Univer­
sity and Western Business College.
M rs . M arsey is a people person
and enjoys any o ccu p ation that
allows her to deal with people. Her
line o f em ploym ent reRects this a t­
titu d e. She w orked as a counselor
fo r the d o w n to w n Y M C A ; as a
teacher's aide; as a police clerk for
the Portland Police Dept. and as the
first Black receptionist/agency ac­
countant for Industrial Indemnity.

D .M .E . C hurch. Although she is a
resident o f Vancouver, Washington,
Jean journeys to Portland each Sun­
day and whatevei days are necessary
to worship and be involved in church

o f H ughes M e m o ria l and in the
p ast, served as vice president o f

daughter, Debbie.
When asked what she feels is im ­
portant in selecting and being suc­
cessful in a ca re e r, Jean says,
"B efore deciding on any career, do
extensive research on m any. Once
you have chosen one, co n tin u e to
research (it) to find out as much as
possible about (that) career choice.
"O n c e you know what is needed
(e d u c a tio n , tra in in g , fin a n c ia l
needs, etc .), set out to accomplish
the requirement.
"Be sure that the career you choose
is one that you lik e as w ell as
providing financial stability. Having
an aggressive and o u tg o in g , but
p leasan t, p ers o n a lity is a m ust.
