has had to shift workers and soldiers
c lo s e r to th e b o rd e rs to d e fe n d
a g a in s t c o n tr a a tta c k s . A ls o , she
s a id , fo r m e r c o ffe e p ic k e rs n ow
have land because o f the c o u n try ’ s
r e v o lu t io n a r y la n d r e f o r m p r o ­
g ra m s . T h e re v o lu tio n means they
n o lo n g e r have to p ick c o ffe e , she
said.
C o n s e q u e n tly , said W e b ste r, N i ­
caragua has few er pickers this year,
y e t because c o ffe e is o ne o f the
co u n try's essential cash crops, " I t ’ s
critical fo r them to get the crop in so
they can get their cash flow g o in g .”
P ro d u c tio n b attalio ns have already
been form ed in N icaragua, she said,
m ade up o f 25 .00 0 volunteers fro m
c itie s in c lu d in g s tu d en ts, g o v e rn ­
ment employees and housewives.
In a d d itio n , she said, the N ic a ra ­
guan governm ent has p ul out a call
f o r in t e r n a tio n a l v o lu n te e rs , an d
fo u rte e n fro m P o rtla n d are g oing .
T hey range in age fro m late teen-age
to age 6 7 , she s a id , and w ill leave
P o rtland in tw o groups, one on Jan­
uary 29 th , the other Feb. 12th. A f ­
te r m e e tin g in M ia m i w ith o th e r
N o r t h A m e r ic a n v o lu n te e rs , they
w ill leave fo r M a n a g u a on A e ro n -
ica, the Nicaraguan airlin e, which is
o ffe rin g special reduced fares.
W e b s te r said v o lu n te e rs pay fo r
th e ir tra n s p o rta tio n to N ic a ra g u a ,
but once in the c ou ntry the N ic a ra ­
guan governm ent w ill pick up food,
housing and tra n s p o rta tio n costs.
She said th e v o lu n te e rs w ill w o rk
w ith N ic a ra g u a n s , and live as they
do.
C o n d itio n s on th e c o ffe e fa rm s
are rugged and the w o rk h a rd , she
said. Food is m ainly rice and beans,
a n d v o lu n te e rs can e x p e c t to go
w ith o u t e le c tr ic ity a n d p lu m b in g .
W o rk lasts fro m early m orning until
a b o u t n o o n , she s a id , w ith a f t e r ­
noons set aside fo r edu catio nal and
cultural activities. T o ta l cost inclu d ­

M a rv in B. Jones was born M arc h
12, 1935 in H o uston , Texas. H e was
fo rm e rly employed by Building E n ­
viro nm ental Systems o f P o rtla n d ,
O regon. M r. Jones died on January
20, 1984 at Em anuel H o sp ital. H e is
survived by T ru d y M a rie , m other o f
his tw o daughters, Sherry L . W h ite
and Jennifer M . Jones o f P o rtla n d ,
