M a rtin L uth er K ing, Jr. The event combined a luncheon and pro gram arranged for over 300 persons at the Red Lion Inn at Lloyd Center on M onday, January 16th. Invocation was by the Rev. Curtis Kirkpatrice o f Lents United M etho dist C h u rch . W elcom e was by M Eldon G reen, C h air o f the Federal Executive Board. Comments during the program were by James Robin son, president o f Black in Govern- m ent/C olum bia River Chapter who is an auditor for BPA . Principal speaker was C ity C o m m issioner Charles Jo rd an , p in ch hitting for Oregon Symphony C o n ductor James D eP reist who could not attend. Jordan chose to involve his audience in reflection on a per sonal com m itm ent to precepts laid down by D r. King in his many ser- vmons about " lo v e and hope and the brotherhood o f m a n .” " T h o u s a n d s ," said J o rd a n , " w i l l jo in hands to d a y , but not w ith their hearts. W e have learned to walk on the moon, but not with each other.” He revealed a little o f his own per sonal philosop h y, saying th a t, “ I believe that every man is good. I be lieve that he w ill do th at w hich is good, right, and decent, but that be- casue o f fear, jealousy, or insecuri ty, he may n o t ----- W e forget who we a re — ch ild re n o f G o d .” H e asked his audience, “ W hat are you going to do ab o u t the p rin cip als taught by D r. King?” Charging his audience to relax and to remember w ho they are, he rem ind ed them th at " w h e n you put the man in place, the world comes together.” P rio r to Jo rd an ’ s address. Knott St. The festival w ill be a s ix -h o u r social and ed u ca tio n a l event consisting o f exhibits, demon strations and performances. Admis sion is $1.00 for adults, children are free. The festival w ill be a tribute to P o rtla n d 's Black artists and a d dresses the need to expand the Black a rtis t's audience both w ith in and outside o f the Black C o m m u n ity .
