The award was a plaque honoring him for his work in Com m unity Ser vices. Several months ago. representa tive Wyden was the keynote speaker at a Senior Citizens Banquet spon sored by D r. Carl Parker o f People to People Ministerics. a local com munity outreach program. Repre sentative W yden’ s speech impressed all those in attendance. The award was presented by Elder Ted Jones, I I , pastor o f Sharon Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Elder Jones also presented represen (alive Wyden an additional gift, a book entitled Tell it to the World, by Mervyn M axwell. His acknolwedgement o f the award cov ered some o f the statements made earlier. "Y o u don’t measure a society by the material goods pro duced or the wealth accumulated. You measure a society by the way you treat those in the dawn o f life, our very young people; those in the twilight o f their lives, our elderly people and those in the shadows of life, those who cannot, for one rea son or another, provide for them selves." He had attended a meeting earlier in the morning where the agenda in cluded a discussion on strengthening the Black colleges and making it possible for young people to get scholarships for their education. "They are our future and if we don’ t protect our future we will not have the kind of things this country should have for our grandchildren o f future generations. A t the other end o f the age spectrum, the senior citizens, there is a great challenge— the medicare program. Medicare has been a lifeline for our elderly people. W ithout it, they are living in fear o f losing their homes if they are hit by a serious illness or other calamity. W hat makes me so appre ciative o f this award is symbolic of the effort in this community and people around the country to come together, young and old generations together work for the good o f people as a whole, not for material goods, not for wealth but as stated earlier those in the dawn o f life, our young people, those in the twilight o f life, the elderly and those in the shadows o f life. That is what this country is all about. That is how we are going to make progress as Am er icans." C. However, the individual who fails to go early to the be reaved home need not assume that he may not go later. Condolence calls may be made at any time, be fore the funeral or after, during the first weeks o f grief.
