Entertainment Special to Stevie W onder. Paul McCartney. Roberta Flack, Stephanie M ills. Lionel Richie. Sister Sledge and Taste o f Honey are a few o f the superstars highlighting the fourth annual “ Lou Rawls Parade o f Stars" television fund-raising special to benefit the United Negro College Fund and its 42 private, historically Black colleges and universities. Lou Rawls hosts the special with co-hosts Ed M c M a hon and M arilyn M cCoo from the Cocoanut Grove at (he Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., has provided seed money for the "Parade o f Stars” since its inception four years ago. Additional funds are invested by the Budweiser brand o f Anheuser-Busch for promoting lo cal telecasts. Other celebrities appearing during the "Parade o f Stars" include Thelma Houston, Susan Anton, Nell Carter, Cheryl Lynn, Norm Crosby, John Schneider, Dick C lark, Debbie Allen, Barbie Benton, Andrae Crouch, T .G . Sheppard and W illie Tyler and Lester. "T h e *Lou Rawls Parade of Stars' has captured the hearts and minds o f America, attracting thousands o f Americans to join hands in this very worthy cause," said August A . "Through the ‘ Pa rade o f Stars,' U N C F 's mission has become better known than ever before and its needs more widely ac cepted. We hope that through this program, people will see the effectiveness o f uniting behind a common goal." This year, some 45,000 students are enrolled in U N C F colleges and universities. Over 90 percent o f these young people require financial assistance, and half come from families earning less than $13,700 annually. High unem ployment and recent cuts in federal financial aid are making it difficult for these young men and women to continue their pursuit o f higher education. Funds raised by the United Negro College Fund and its volunteers help keep tuition at U N C F colleges and universities low. "T h e 'Parade o f Stars' has conveyed U N C F ’s mes sage that 'A mind is a terrible thing to waste’ to people across the nation, generating pledges and contributions that our college urgently need,” said Christopher F. Ed- ley. Executive Director o f the United Negro College Fund. "Reduced federal aid and high unemployment are making it increasingly difficult for U N C F students to cover their college costs. W e look to programs such as the 'Parade of Stars* to help us keep the doors to higher education open to the thousands o f deserving, but financially disadvantaged young people." In the past two years, the "Parade o f Stars’ * has gen erated more than $10 million in pledges and contribu tions to U N C F . The special has aired in over 50 cities around the nation. The 1983 television special was pro duced by Dick Clark Presentations, Inc.
