Rich Brook* it in hi* seventh year a* head coach at the University o f Oregon. H e '* currently enjoying the second longest tenure in the *chooi't history. He trail* only Len Casano va. who guded the Duck* through some 16 odd seasons before retiring in 1466 Rich Brooks has not set the colle giate football world on fire by any means. When taking over for Casa nova Brooks struggled through suc cessive years o f 2-9 and 2-8-1 in 1981 and 1982. When with Reggie Ogburn at the he|m Brooks jumped up to post back-to-back winning record* o f 6-3 and 6-3-2 during the next two cam paigns. Brooks seemingly had hi* pro gram o ff the ground and headed toward the nation's elite. But then tragedy struck: Oregon was hit with major N C A A violations that saw him lose six players, mostly from the skill positions. His program has never recovered. Brooks, however, is a coach with a winning background. W hile a player for O S U , Rich Brooks was 8- 0-1 against the University o f O re gon. Brooks played defensive back during the Terry Baker era. As head coach he's never lost a game to the Beavers. His record is a nifty 6-0 heading into the 1983 contest. Broooks has a reputation as a players' coach. The popular 42-year-old Brooks has displayed a fair and unmistak able rapport with Oregon coaches, staff, fans and players. His devotion to his players was solidly tested back in the 81 violation years. Brooks stood solidly behind his players. And when his star running back was indicted on a rape charge. Brooks testified in the players’ behalf. He has seen football from both sides. He was both a player and coach; he's been with successful programs and unsuccessful ones. He was an assistant at U C L A , the LA Rams and 49ers before taking over at Oregon. The native o f Grass Valley. C ali fornia, and four-sport letterman at Nevada Union High School, brought Oregon football fans to heights not seen since the m id-’60s when the Ducks posted those back- to-back winning seasons in the early '80s. KVKTMAIfl O HEAD COACH RICH BROOKS For his efforts Brook* was named 1979 pac-10 and District I X coach o f the year after his 6-3 season. Brooks' coaching career began a* defensive end coach under Dee A n dros. But it was the influence o f Tommy Protho that formed Brooks' coaching philosophy. Brooks has always been known as a strong defensive coach. During his five year* as a coach with O S U , the Beavers were ranked twice in the nation's top ten. C lim b ing middle blocker, Tam m ie Rogers, a 5-9 senior hitter, and either junior Amy Brown or freshman Carol Sears at outside hitter. Oregon is perhaps the most im proved team in the West. Sopho more Sue Harbour is waging a strong campaign for all-America honors, hitting 320 on the year with 306 kills, 26 service aces and 104 in the booth. Cosell didn't like W il liamson and just flat out refused to talk to him on the air. Williamson lasted one year and then was dropped. M onday night football is the broadcaster's plum. It is viewed by more people than any other regu lar program. Howard eventually got to W illiam son— is O .J. Simpson next? How ard was in rare, form during last Monday's Jet-Buffalo game. When O .J. " H o w do you know ,” he said, "you weren't there.” That statement to a colleaaue was distasteful. Cosell has made other statements in the past that were out o f line. Oregon's football program does have a few problems, but Rich Brooks is certainly not among them. Some o f it probably was un called for as fans around the coun try shunned Howard's aloofness and seemingly “ kn o w -it-all" atti tude. Some o f us tried to judge Coscll favorably for the knowledge he brought to (he game, while others marvelled at hi* wonderful grasp of the English language. Now , over the years Howard's contribution has certainly slipped. Yes. M r. Cosell's broadcasting days are numbered. The handwrit ing is on the wall. Through the early years Cosell was surely controver sial. but some o f us admired him for that.
