One Step A w ay" is the theme for a Family Com m unity Leadership Conference October 22, 198J. The conference will be held at Portland Comm unity College Cascade Campus, 705 N .E . Killingsworth, says Cal R W illiams, M ultnom ah County Extension agent and conference coordinator. The conference is co-sponsored by Oregon Stale University Extension Service and the Black Women's N et work. Registration begins at 8 a.m . and the conference will run until 3 p.m. The goal of the conference is to increase the leadership capabilities and involvement of women and m i norities who are traditionally not represented in the public policy deci sion-making process. The focus of the conference is on issues that a f fect the quality of community parti cipation in the political decision making process. The Ballad o f Gregoria Cortez, will have its Portland premeire on Saturday, October 8th at 8:(X) p.m. Gregorio Cortez is an account of a famous turn-of-the century incident in Texas in which a young Mexican cowhand killed a sheriff qver a mistranslation between Spanish and English. PCC program unique An advisory committee has been named to provide advice and guid ance in form ation of Portland Com munity College's new Alcohol and Drug Counseling program which is pending accreditation with the State of Oregon. The action was taken by the P C C Board o f Directors at its regular September meeting. When the new program is devel oped, it w ill be the only one of its kind in Oregon. Members o f the new advisory committee testified at an earlier PC C board meeting that they see a great need in the Portland area for such an educational pro gram since many people now serving as drug and alcohol counselors have no form al training in the subject. It is estimated that a number o f indivi duals already possessing degrees will enroll in the specialized classes o f fered through PCC.
