Oregon, recently re turned from a 10-day, six-city tour of the United States as a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (A K A ) 1983 Domestic Travel Tour. Christina, daughter o f Isaac and Lurlenc Shamsud-Dtn, is a 12th grader at Lincoln High School where she is an honor roll student and has earned a junior varsity letter in track. Christina is active in the Lincoln Jr. Service Club, IC E Black Student Union and the International S'udies Center. Her other activities include Les Femmes social service club and the W orld Affairs Council. "Selected on the basis o f their winning essays, "W h y Black C ol leges?," Christina and 29 other girls from around the country visited places o f historic and cultural im portance in Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Philadelphia. The Domestic Travel Tour, a component o f A K A s Programs for Service focus, was initiated in 1969 to provide an opportunity for high school junior and senior girls to en rich their educational experiences outside the form al classroom set ting, and to expose them to their rich historic and cultural heritage. Sites visited include the DuSable Museum o f African American His tory (Chicago); M artin Luther King Center for Social Change, the U n i versity complex (A tlanta); Disney W orld, Epcot (O rlando); Indepen dence H all, the Liberty Bell (Phila delphia); Fanuiel H a ll (Boston); Lincoln Center, Rockefeller Center, Harlem (New York); and the W hite House, Library o f Congress and Capitol H ill (W ashington, D .C .). Alpha Kappa Alpha, the nation's oldest Greek-letter organization, established by and for Black women, was founded at Howard University in 1908. From a tradi tional college sorority with a focus on intellectual and social life, A K A has expanded into a national service organization through which its members work to improve social conditions and the quality o f life in their home communities. The school zone speed limit is 20m . p.h. 2. Do not pass a school bus from either direction i f the red lights are flashing. 3. Stop for pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks. The Police Bureau T raffic D ivi sion will have special patrols assigned to specifically watch the areas around schools, school crossings, and school bus stops. Additional patrols will be check ing the areas near high schools as we frequently receive complaints about reckless driving before and after school.
