Page 12 Portland Observer, September 7, 1983 Sport Talk by Ron Sykes Sports Editor Claude "B u d d y " Young, 51, died in an automobile crash last Saturday night. Young was a former all- American running back out of the University of Illinois. He later starred for the New York Yankee football team and was currently working in the N F L front office. Young died when the rented car in which he was driving failed to nego tiate a turn. I remember hearing first about Young's gridiron efforts when I was a young kid in Illinois. Buddy Young's name was magic in those days, because he was the first Black player to star at the U o f I. J.C. Caroline was to come on later, but in those days it was all Buddy Young. Buddy, at S-S and 165 pounds, was considered a little man but played with the speed and grace that made him a foot taller and 40 pounds heavier. Claude "B u d d y " Young was later No Jim Brown/No Hall of Fame And while we're on the subject, we received a letter from John Sea- well who want* to know why we never mention the H all o f Fame in the Observer.W ell, frankly, because it doesn't exist. Explanation: Any time the selection committee can meet to induct the game’s greatest players, and continue to ignore Jim Brown, then one would have bo completely ignore the foundation. Jim Brown is perhaps the finest running back the game has ever drawn. Brown was the prototype o f which all running backs should be made. The man stood 6-2, weighed 5600 N.E. Union 287 5330 235 pounds and could run like the wind, while hitting like a bull. Jim Brown was " th e " running back and, for whatever reasons they choose to leave him out, I also choose to not recognize the founda tion. Jim Brown played eight seasons and rushed for over 1,000 yards each o f those years. And that was during the days when the sched ule only consisted o f 12 games. Today's players are still honored for a milestone. 1.000 yards, that stretches over 16 games The average running back lasts just 5 years in the N F L . Jim Brown is the only running back that never missed a game due to injuries. And that in itself is quite a record. So, until the foundation recognizes the greatest running back o f all t im e .. . this writer will not recognize the foundation. Jaara to Oragon Jeers are in order for the sad state o f football as played at both the University o f Oregon and Oregon State. The U o f O was humiliated 21-15 by University o f Pacific, a team that was 2-9 last year in the lowly P C A A . Oregon State’s fate was even worse as they were annihilated and embarrassed by Arizona. 50-6. OSU didn't score a touchdown until the Arizona Wildcats put their 4th team players on the field. OSU was so disorganized that on two separate occasions they were penalized for having 14 player* on defense.
