Union by Hon Sykes Sports Editor 287-6330 Cuban national champion Gorge Luía Gonzalez, 21, had little trouble in hia match against the USA's na tional champion, TyreU Biggs. Ooo- zalez, who stands 6*6" and 2 13 lbs., pressured the American throughout to win a unanimous decision. O on zalez then stopped Elvia Lauiza o f Venezuela to win the Pan American auper-heavyweight title. The road teems bright for Gonzalez, and dim for the American Biggs. Biggs lost twice to three-time Olympian Teo filo Stevenson — once by decision and again via the K O route. The U .S. must now begin its search for another challenger to the Cuban power. Biggs is not the answer. W hile Gonzalez' record is impres sive, don't look for him to represent Cuba in the 1964 Olympics. Besides winning the Cuban na tional« he also won the gold in H u n gary and German Democratic Republic. He defeated U lli Kaden who, in turn, had defeated Steven- the previous year. Gonzalez, then defeated the U .S .'s Craig Payne in the same year, 1962. The logical question now is why isn't the Cuban national champ going to the 1964 Olympics? In Cuba their Olympic hopefuls are named; no trials are held as in the U .S. Gorge Oonzalez, as good as he is, must wait until Stevenson tries for his 4th Olympic gold medal before he tries for his. T hat's called taking your turn in the pecking order. Oonzalez is a rough, tough competitor and looks like a good bet in 1988. However, the 2 1-year-old Cuban will be all o f 25 by then. T h a t’s about five years from now, and his opponent is probably some U .S . kid playing little league baseball somewhere. And while on the subject o f box ing, here's one from a sports enthu siast, and timely contributor, Louis Harris: Just have to wonder, writes Louis, how the Cuban boxers would fare against our (U .S .) best. We continue to sec their men against our boys. W ould we lose any gold medals i f we sent our best boxers to represent the U .S . with the likes o f M acho Camacho, Tommy Hearns, M arvin Hagler, etc. W ouldn't it be nice. Yes, it cer tainly would for the U .S ., but not for the rest o f the world. After viewing the past Pan A m er ican Games, I would certainly sup port banning the sport. Not that I ’m against pugilism, but it's ridiculous how much politics are now involved. It was particularly difficult to watch Paul Oonzalez, 106, fight his heart out only to be robbed by the officiating. Gonzalez was clearly the winner as he out-punched Rafael Ramos from Puerto Rico through out the bout. Oonzalez won the first two rounds easily and the third round was very cloac. The decision, however, went to Ramos after the jury overturned the 3-2 verdict favor ing the American. " I was robbed,” Oonzalez said. And robbed he was. Ramos should World Jr. Welterweight Chemplon Aeron "The Hawk" Pryor. (Photo: KO Magazine) have been ashamed to take his Oold . . .it was a disgrace to amateur box Ron's NFL plcka of the week ing. Pryor va Arguello The same as the first fight, only this time Aaron “ The H a w k ” Pryor will not take to long. Pryor, before, had more respect for the lightweight champion, Arguello. After now knowing that there’s nothing in Arguello's arsenal that can hurt him, the Hawk will find, seek and destroy. And it shouldn't take more than eight rounds. Arguello has been a good cham pion. but this it one fight that he doesn't need. Instead o f Pryor, his handlers should have been looking for a rematch with Boom Boom M ancini. It would have been an easier fight and brought more money. A t 139 lbs., the H aw k just may be invincible. A t least he believes he is. And so do many others. Did you hear that, M r. Peters?
