English driver David Hobbs, 43,
is one o f the w orld’s most respected
road racing talents whose list of
credentials in virtually every form of
four-wheeled competition speak for
themselves.
Hobbs will drive in the 1983 Bud
weiser Trans-Am Series in the Bud-
weiscr Chevrolet
Cam aro

owned by Portland, O re., business
man Neil DeAtley. Hobbs’ team
mate is young black driver W illy T.
Ribbs.
Ribbs is a 27-year-old driver from
San Jose, C a lif., who has been
involved with auto racing since
1977. But for the only top-flight
black race driver in America today,
the Budweiser Camaro offers Ribbs
his first chance to distinguish him
self behind the wheel.
Recently, Hobbs, a 24-year veter
an o f the road racing wars, was
asked to comment on Ribbs’ abilities.
" W illy has had some ups and
downs during his career," said
Hobbs, who has also served as an
expert analyst for C B S -TV 's motor
sport telecasts. "B u t he’s demon
strated tremendous racing skills and
I think with the strong team behind
him, he’ ll make his mark in motor
racing this year."
Ribbs got the inspiration to be
come a race driver from his father,
who drove for years in Northern
California.
At 21, Ribbs showed immediate
promise in his first season by cap
turing the Dunlop Series Trophy in
'77 as young driver o f the year in
fo rm u la Ford competition.
“ I went to Europe and joined the
Scorpion Racing Team because I
felt Europe was the best place to
start in road racing," Ribbs ex
plained.
In the 1978 Long Beach Grand
Prix Formula Atlantic race, Ribbs
ran fourth in a Budweiser-spon-
sored March most o f the race but re
tired with a broken throttle. In 1981
he grabbed a spot on the Red Roof
Inns/Pacific M otor Sports Formula
Atlantic team. In 1982 he sat on the
pole for the Formula Atlantic race
at Long Beach, and led much o f the
race before retiring with mechanical
problems.
Now , he has been given the op-
