Page 12 Portland Observar, Juna 8,1983 T askf orce studies noise A newly formed citizens task force has been appointed by C ity Commissioner Charles Jordan to review the Portland International Raceway, effective June 7 ,1 9 *3 . The task force will serve as an advisory body to review and make recommendations for improvement to the Parks Commissioner. Their charge it to research alternatives for noise mitigation at the P IR and re­ view the general operations o f the facility. "T h e task force was formed as a result o f neighborhood concerns,** Jordan said, "and will provide an opportunity for citizens to recom­ mend solutions to longstanding neighborhood problems.** DAVID HOBBS WILLY T. BIBBS Local car enters Rose Cup English driver David Hobbs, 43, is one o f the w orld’s most respected road racing talents whose list of credentials in virtually every form of four-wheeled competition speak for themselves. Hobbs will drive in the 1983 Bud weiser Trans-Am Series in the Bud- weiscr Chevrolet Cam aro Z28 owned by Portland, O re., business­ man Neil DeAtley. Hobbs’ team­ mate is young black driver W illy T. Ribbs. Ribbs is a 27-year-old driver from San Jose, C a lif., who has been involved with auto racing since 1977. But for the only top-flight black race driver in America today, the Budweiser Camaro offers Ribbs his first chance to distinguish him­ self behind the wheel. Recently, Hobbs, a 24-year veter­ an o f the road racing wars, was asked to comment on Ribbs’ abilities. " W illy has had some ups and downs during his career," said Hobbs, who has also served as an expert analyst for C B S -TV 's motor sport telecasts. "B u t he’s demon­ strated tremendous racing skills and I think with the strong team behind him, he’ ll make his mark in motor racing this year." Ribbs got the inspiration to be­ come a race driver from his father, who drove for years in Northern California. At 21, Ribbs showed immediate promise in his first season by cap­ turing the Dunlop Series Trophy in '77 as young driver o f the year in fo rm u la Ford competition. “ I went to Europe and joined the Scorpion Racing Team because I felt Europe was the best place to start in road racing," Ribbs ex­ plained. In the 1978 Long Beach Grand Prix Formula Atlantic race, Ribbs ran fourth in a Budweiser-spon- sored March most o f the race but re­ tired with a broken throttle. In 1981 he grabbed a spot on the Red Roof Inns/Pacific M otor Sports Formula Atlantic team. In 1982 he sat on the pole for the Formula Atlantic race at Long Beach, and led much o f the race before retiring with mechanical problems. He also received $27,258 as his share o f the playoff money and a Pontiac Trans Am . According to his contract, signed September 2nd as a Houston Rockets free agent, he received $1.6 million in salary and a $1 million bonus. He also received $105,000 for seven home playoff games; $100,000 for averaging 30 minutes playing time; $100,000 in guaranteed endorse­ ments and playoff games; and about $60,000 for an attendance bonus. Malone also made money for the *76ers owners. Philadelphia's gross revenue in­ creased $2.4 million with Malone. W ith Malone they were able to elim ­ inate $1 million in salaries by trad­ ing Caldwell Jones and Lionel Hollins and not signing M ike Bantom and Steve M ix — so the cost o f Malone to the team was only $500,000.
