(Photo: Dan Long) Blazer alumni in great form by Sian Sykes Sport Talk by Ron Sykes, Sports Editor Avezzano's 3-ring circus Whai Oregon Stale football coach Joe Avezzano called a controlled scrimmage, actually turned out to be a three ring circus. Avezzano promised the media that he would show very little. This is probably one o f the few true promises that he has kept in his four years at the helm in Corvallis. Joe is known for his brash state ments. More than a few have been fuel for enemy coaches to ignite their troops. One o f which comes to mind, two years ago after the Beavers had taken a shellacking from a lough Minnesota team, a team that Joe predicted his Beavers could win against, only to fall 38-10. W ell, the next game was againsi Washington S(gie and Joe immediately said “ W e ’re finally playing a team we can match up w ith .” Joe Walden, Cougar head coach, clipped the article and put it on the team bulletin board for all to see. All the Cougars did was bomb the Beavers 24-0. For much of his four years now Coach Avezzano has talked about pride in his football team. Joe is now in his fifth year and it’s nye time that the talking cease and the action begin. In essence, it’s put up or shut up for the Beaver football program. Joe always speaks in glowing terms of his young gladiators, when being candid would be more apropos. Remember how the press and Ians were led to believe Johnny High, the 5’ 9 " stick o f dynamite transfer from Vanderbilt was going to be a Pac-10 sensation. High was a discipline problem and was in actuality kicked o ff the varsity squad. You don’t build successful programs by hiring misfits. A ll were on hand last Saturday to see new quarterback sensation Ricky Greene. Greene, recently released from the San Francisco Giant or ganization, had been making waves in early spring football drills. Instead of showcasing M r. Greene, Avezzano allowed the young man three passes, one o f which was intercepted, and sent him running to the showers. I f the intention was to hold back, then mission accom plished. Oregon State, hungry for a victory. he plays the game I know it’s foolish, but one just has to wonder where these Blazers would be with Malone in the middle. They would surely be at least three games up on the l.akers right now. I f there ever was a man like machine, Moses is it. He gives you the same thing day in and day out over a full 82 games. The man is simply unreal. When the going gets tough, Malone gets going. In a five minute stretch, when the Sixers were behind, Moses scored seven straight points, had five crucial boards and simply blew the New York front line out. And if Moses Malone is not a dominant center, then there never will be one in the NB A. Doug Moe's strategy works 76ers vs. Knicks The Philadelphia 76ers posted a 105-102 win Sunday over the N .Y . Knicks on the way to a 4-0 sweep. These Knicks, however, have no thing to be ashamed of. They were in tough against a team that refused to lose. There are many reasons why these Sixers wouldn’ t lose, but none stand higher than Moses Malone and Andrew Toney. Toney, playing with an injured thigh, deep bruise, wasn’ t nearly as effective as normal But, still, that long range jum p shot was there when needed. And who can say enough about Malone? After almost single-handedly de feating the Knicks in the final game, Moses reportedly said, " I am not a dominating center.” Yes, Moses, and grits ’ ’ain’t” groceries, eggs “ ain’t ” poultry and bears don’ t walk in the woods. In the Sunday finale, Malone had 11 more points and twice as many rebounds than the entire Knick center force. Moses Malone is truly a workman. In fact his proper attire for any game played should include a hard hat and lunch pail. Malone is both relentless and awesome in the way The N B A ’s greatest strategist award should go to Denver coach Doug Moe. in the playoffs against San Antonio, M o e’s strategy was to have his guards back o ff San Antonio point guard Johnny Moore, a player cut by M oe during his rookie year. T o say Moore has taken advantage o f the strategy would be putting it mildly In game I , he totaled 24 points and 1 7 assists; in game 2, 26 points and an NBA-record 20 assists; in game 3, a career high 39 points, also 12 assists, eight rebounds and five steals. The Nuggets are down 3-0 at this writing and probably will be swept. Small wonder, huh! Envela shines There’s a new star on the horizon in Oregon prep track and field. Salem's frosh sensation Gus Envela is the best track prospect since Jefferson’s Mel Renfro back in the late '50s Envela is the holder of several national age group i ecords. When a person hears the expres sion “ Blazer A lum ni” the first thought that goes through his mind is of a group o f old, out o f shape men who used to play for the Port land Trail Blazers. W ell, anyone who happened to be at the Benson High School Gymnasium last Sat urday could see that they were just the opposite o f that. The Alumni hosted a team that represented the Maranatha Church in what would be an eventual route, having the Blazer Alumni up by 22 points at half time, 69-47, after having led the whole game, and then wrapping it up with a I2O-IO9 victory. The Alumni is made up o f mostly ex-Portland Trail Blazers, but some o f the players are just men who have been involved in professional bas ketball, such as Nick Jones, an ex- Golden Stale W arrior, and Rick Lee, a former member o f the San Diego Clippers. The team leader and organizer is John Phillips who himself didn't play for Portland, playing for Philadelphia over ten years ago. When asked about some o f the players not having played for Poitland, Phillips replied, "T h e reason that we have the name Blazer Alumni is mostly just for extra publicity, even though most o f the players did play for Portland, the fans hear this and it brings in more people.” W ith all the extra people coming in you would think that the Alumni would be making quite a bit o f a profit, but the fact is that they don’t make any money at all. " A ll of the money that we make goes to a charity o f some kind, like one time we helped fund a children's organization that needed food, another time we helped an eighth grade basketball team get some uniform s,” says Phillips, "so you see we strictly play for charity.” The Alumni may play for charity o ff the court but on the court it is strictly business, in the last three years the team has lost but 3 times and one o f those losses came in their very first game against the talented Seattle Super Sonic Alum ni. The (cam plays all around the Northwest playing benefit games with anyone from school faculties to other ex- professionals. At first sight the Blazer Alum ni look a little out of shape, but don’t let looks fool you, because the Alumni can really run and gun. They use N B A I2 minute quarters and they are used to scoring over a KM) points.
