Paying The Price Of Fame
Debbie Allen, the $20.000-a-week »tar and choreographer of the critically
acclaimed T V series Fame, tells about the pressures o f her busy career and
her long-distance marriage.
Ms. Allen's hectic schedule requires her to work from dawn-to-dusk. sev
en days a week. The hard work is paying o ff because the series is a favorite
o f m ajor T V critics, was nominated for twelve “ Em m ys" and won Five, and
is number one in England. The main thing pressuring Debbie about Fame is
its failure to catch on in a big way with U .S . audiences. The N B C bosses
have decided to give the show a chance because they Relieve “ there is an au
dience for good television."
In addition to devoting long hours to her career, Debbie has had to sacri
fice time with her husband. In 1982, Debbie moved to Los Angeles when she
got the T V part o f the dance teacher in Fame (she originhated the role in the
movie version). Her husband, W in W ilfo rd , remained in New York where
he works as a songwriter and takes care o f his and Debbie's business affairs.
The separation has been very trying for Debbie but W in ’s maturity has been
quite helpful. She says, " H e respects and loves me, and he’s w illing to do
without me and let me do what I hjf.x to d o ."

Jazz, Blues,
Greatest
Johnny Otis, unquestionably one
o f the great figures in rhythm and
blues history, will make a rare Port
land appearance at the E u p h o ria
T ave rn and R e sta u ran t, 320 S .E .
2nd A v e ., M arch 14th, 1983. O tis
has distinguished h im self in just
about every corner o f jazz and RAB
during his forty-odd-years as a writ
er, arranger, band leader, and talent
scout. H e discovered E tta James,
Little Esther Phillips, Hank Ballard
and the M id n ig h te rs , and L ittle
W illie John, produced Big M am a
Thornton and Johnny Ace, and led
the hottest RA B show o f the early
fifties.
Otis is regarded by rock and roll
historians as a m a jo r figu re in
rhythm and blues, an unusual fact
when one considers that, to this day,
most rock fans have never heard o f
him.
Otis, o f Greek and Black parent
age, began his professional career at
the dawning o f the '50s, and earned
his in itia l stripes as a bandleader
and writer o f blues songs. But it was
O tis’ entrepreneurial ear that made
him a fo rm id ab le name in rhythm
and blues circles before h alf o f that
decade had elapsed.
