O tis has distinguished h im self in just about every corner o f jazz and RAB during his forty-odd-years as a writ er, arranger, band leader, and talent scout. H e discovered E tta James, Little Esther Phillips, Hank Ballard and the M id n ig h te rs , and L ittle W illie John, produced Big M am a Thornton and Johnny Ace, and led the hottest RA B show o f the early fifties. Otis is regarded by rock and roll historians as a m a jo r figu re in rhythm and blues, an unusual fact when one considers that, to this day, most rock fans have never heard o f him. Otis, o f Greek and Black parent age, began his professional career at the dawning o f the '50s, and earned his in itia l stripes as a bandleader and writer o f blues songs. But it was O tis’ entrepreneurial ear that made him a fo rm id ab le name in rhythm and blues circles before h alf o f that decade had elapsed. 2361 N.
