bers.

and we are reaching out to those
who live in Salem,” said Pritchett.

first part of the month lectures were
given by McKinley Burt, Jr., author
of Black Inventors o f America, and
by Herman L. Brame, who spoke of
"T he World Records of Black Peo­
ple.” Brame is the author of a book
by the same title.
For Wednesday, February 16,
Gloria Stewart, educator, will discuss
the artist, Zora Neale Hurston, and
her work. The following week, Feb­
ruary 23, W illiam H . McClendon,
author, educator and lecturer, will
discuss Paul Robeson, whom he has
called “ an authentic voice for black
self-determination.”

The BEC presented a Black His­
tory Costume Ball on Saturday
evening, at the C lu b home o f the
Royal Esquires, as a benefit for the

organized resistance to British im ­
perialism back in the beginning of
this twentieth century. During the
day, this queen is the lovely Joyce
Harris, director of the BEC.

cause he was also "Famous Amos."

prisingly do, and the degree of dis­
cipline of which the body is capable
when performing in chorus.
The six boneless people who
bounced, bounded, and bonded to­
gether through the evening were at
their very best in the second half of
the program. The choreography of
Pilobous was demanding in control
o f body and tim ing for the three
men and three women who surely
had to breathe in and breathe out in
unison to accomplish the one-ness
of their art.
T hat the dancers were well re­
hearsed was evident. Joan W ood­
bury confirmed that daily rehearsals
lasting six or seven hours are re­
quired to keep the company’s rhy­
thm in fine tune. Woodbury told us
that all the performers are not ballet
dancers— some joined the troupe
who had been tap dancers or even
folk dancers. Their ages range from
23 to 33. They tend to stay in the
company longer than is usual, shar­
ing common aesthetic values as they
do, Woodbury said. One individual
has been involved with the troupe 10
years, and all o f them started as
University of Utah student dancers.
In Portland Ririe-Woodbury per­
sonnel visited and taught classes at
nine schools o f P ortland Public
Schools.
