Sports Editor H a irC u ts ..............................................610.00| Unless you've spent the past six months hibernating, or you've just returned to the U .S . fro m a long sabbatical in the fa r reaches o f China, or if for some u ra n ic reason you chose to tune out the media for the last two years, then you're prob ably aware th at Jim Paxson it the Trailblazer team captain. I f you som ehow m anaged to m ark none o f the above, then you probably know that Pax is the floor leader. I f you d id n 't know it's a miracle because we've all been reminded far too many times. For co m p ariso n.. who out there can quickly name the captain who preceded Paxson? Hm m m . Is n 't it interesting that the New Y o rk Knicks h aven 't been able to “ b u y " a cham pionship since they went 62-80 way back in 1968. In their heyday the Knicks consis tently filled Madison Square Garden to the tune o f some 19,000 fans to easily lead the N B A in both games won and attend an ce. Since then, how ever, the K nicks have fa ile d miserably in both departments. They are cu rren tly struggling in the tough eastern division with a ter rible 3-1J won-loss record. The Knicks, probably the wealthi est N B A team, rival only the Cleve land Cavaliers in squandering m on ey and m aking bad deals, in their continuing e ffo rt to im prove their franchise. They (Knicks) once used $5 0 0 ,0 0 0 as bonus m oney to sign then New Y o rk N et star G eorge McGinnis, only to have the deal de clared invalid , losing both George and the money. Then they dealt with Seattle for Spencer Hayw ood, only to have Spencer perform at an all- time low, and finally leaving the club to play in Europe They next tried and succeeded in lu rin g M a rv in Webster from Seattle. Webster was paid a trem endous salary and he, too, never produced, and is now rel egated to the bench. In spite o f all the bungling in the past by New York, it is still hard for inc to believe they passed on bidding for both Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Moses Malone. In a story published by an eastern newspaper K areem ’ s agent let it be know n to New Y o rk that Jabb ar was interested in finishing his career in his hometown o f New York City. J a b b a r, a fte r try in g to get D r. Jerry Buss to assure him a good sal ary, somewhere in excess of one m il lion per year, for the next five years, and being unable to get said assur- ancesd from M r. Buss, decided he would take his services elsewhere, somewhere where the 7-2 superstar would be appreciated. It should be said that because o f Kareem 's age, 35, Buss w anted to w ait a year and see how m u ch , if an y, Jabb ar's talents had d im in ished. Anyway, the story has it that Jab bar w ould have signed w ith the Knicks had M r. David Debusschere been interested. Debusschere was not. Strange but true. N ow , if you find that story hard to believe, then this one should be even more so. This summer while Mose M alone was w andering arou n d as a free agent, Debusschere is alleged to have nixed any possible deal fo r M oses, p ro b a b ly the p rem iere young center in the game today, be cause Dave felt that Malone had too m any shortcom ings as a p la y e r. Dave listed the fo llo w in g faults in M alo n e , and all those things that Debusschere found fault in M r. M a lone is doing so well with the Sixers. JCOLBE IN S U R A N C E ' SERVICES A n “ Moses can't block shots, doesn’t m ake the o u tlet pass and is not a player that would complement Ray Richardson w ell." So, where not is Ray Richardson? Playing guard for A l A llies at G ol den State, w hile M alo n e is leading Philly to a grand start. And trade winds are again blow ing in the N B A . This tim e it has Portland's Mychal Thompson going to Boston for Kevin M cHale It is rumored that Red ^uerbach has long been a fan o f M y c h a l's . This would seem to follow the Bla zer pattern. Portland is known to be a club where m in o rity is a no-no. Thompson is the one player on the squad with the most seniority so if any is to go, then “ B u m " w ould seem the most likely candidate. Coach Jack Ramsay is said to like the toughness in M cH ale in contrast to the tim id play, at times, o f M y chal. It appears that I have picked up quite a follow ing from boxing fans down at OSP. W e 're extrem ely happy that the fellows are reading us, and are more than happy to receive th eir co m ments on our publication as a whole and my column in particular. O f interest was a letter received dated December 6, 1982, from a M r. A b d ullah , we believe. In his letter, M r. A b d u llah stated that while he enjoyed my column overall, that the Observer should hire someone else to w rite on m a jo r boxing events “ since M r. Sykes obviously doesn't know anything about boxing.'* H e w ent on to list my pick o f G erry Cooney over l.a rry Holmes, Benitez over Hearns and erroneous ly staled that I chose Arguello over Pryor. W here was my faithful following down at OSP when we picked Sugar Ray Leonard over Thomas Hearns, L eo n a rd over R o b erto D u ra n , H earns over P e p ito Cuevas and Dwight Braxton over Matthew Saad Muhammad? It 's fo r sure that I w o n 't pick them all correct; what is fo r sure, however, is that I w ill always have the courage to m ake those picks. This w rite r w ill never be g uilty o f hiding behind the pen. And, maybe someday, we can ar range a forum down at OSP where we could have a little question and answer session on boxing. I would be more than glad to explain the rea soning behind my picks. Especially the C ooney-H olm es a ffa ir. U huru good buddies. T his week in the N F L ; R on's picks: N .Y .
