T a y lo r is a part-time rehabilitation therapist at "Conquest C e n te r,” an agency o f the Center for C om m unity M ental H e a lth . “ Conquest C e n te r” is a daycare treatm ent center fo r the chronically m entally ill on U nion Ave. M rs. T aylo r counsels her c li ents in developing job skills and as- siting those who have spent time in hospitals to form realistic views in work in the competitive workforce. Mrs. Taylor is also a published poet o f modern style weaving verbal pic tures of her life in Kenya and o f the people o f the countryside. The Taylors are the parents o f a young son and daughter, Christo pher, 5 years, and J e n n ife r, 13 months. The talented Taylors w ill be ex hibitors at the November 14 Assem bly o f Black Artists at the Firehouse In te rc u ltu ra l C enter when The Links, Inc. celebrates its 25th Anni versary o f Chapter activities in the Portland community. They will also show a unique craft item : a q u ilt, handm ade, and ornam ented by transfer from xerox design, photo graphs o f hands, and bedbugs. Judge Mercedes D eiz o f C ircu it Court is back in town after her re cent participation in a series o f class discussions and public programs on the Lehigh U n ive rs ity campus in Pennsylvania. Judge Deiz was presented by the W oodrow W ilson Fellowship Pro gram. As a Visiting Fellow , Judge D eiz has made several trips to the Lehigh campus in encouraging "the flow o f ideas between academic and non-academ ic worlds and to help students to see the relation between a lib e ra l arts education and their lives after graduation.” U pon her retu rn to P o rtla n d Judge Deiz gave the keynote speech at Lewis and C lark School o f Law for an all-day affair arranged by the Oregon State Bar Association in be h a lf o f m in o rity students on that campus. H er topic, “ Routes In to Law School and Roads O u t,” gave students a nudge to consider “ ex panded areas that a law degree can take once they have reached their goals. No longer must a law student make a choice between becoming ei ther a tria l law yer or a c orpo rate lawyer,” Judge Deiz said. “ There are new technological fields to explore such as the compu ter occupations, urban and ru ra l planning, industiral engineering and so on into politics and economics and international relations. “ Everyone h ere,” she said to classes, "w ill be calling the shots to m o rro w . “ We are in a world o f micro-elec tronics, macro-economics— a com pletely new world of exploding pos sibilities and hopes. His w ork, some o f it on exhibit u n til N ovem ber 15 at the Templeton Center on the Lewis and Clark campus, reflects his interest in precision, and study o f the contrast o f Order and Disorder. He deals in abstracts and with no actual object and he sticks to black and w hite. " M y pictures have to do with space and position in space,” Taylor says. “ I ’ m also concerned w ith the re flective qualities o f surface and the use o f texture. It please me to do them . They have no hidden meaning.” An observer looking at the exhibit found the Taylor paintings a ffo rd ing a sense o f tranquility. The T aylo rs came to P o rtlan d from Western Kentucky University rt was the setting for their acquaint ance begun over a piece o f sculp ture. So two Americans fell in love. Stephanie T a y lo r has since ac quired her philosophy degree from Kalamazoo and is currently working towards an advanced degree in clini cal psychology. The Taylors married in America but (hey have lived in N airo b i, re turning there when a position as As sistant Professor o f A rt and Design at the University o f Nairobi opened for Mike. Both have collected numerous items o f sculpture, rugs, tables, stools, pictures, fabric, jewelry and even games from A frica. But, per haps, am ong some o f th e ir more prized possessions from Nairobi are their some half-dozen beds. " W e have to have a house big enough to put up our beds. We love them so. A favo rite?
