A d d e rly , c o rn e tis t, com poser, e du cato r and le c tu re r— has been an im p ortan t p articip a n t in the jazz scene fo r a quarter-century and is considered to be one o f the pioneers o f m odern jazz. In the early ’ 50s he played in an A rm y band o f w hich his b ro the r, “ Can- .lo n b a ll,” was leader, and spent his free tim e sitting in w ith jazz and blues groups w hich were developing bebop sounds. A fte r the A rm y he graduated fro m F lo rid a A & M , then went w ith the L io n e l H am pton band. The A d de rly b ro th e rs fo rm e d th e ir fir s t p ro fe ssio n a l q u in te t and when the g ro u p d is banded N at jo in e d J. J. Johnson and then W oody H erm an. The brothers reunited in 1959 in the C annonball A d d e rly Q u inte t, one o f the most popular groups in jazz history. In recent years Nat has toured the U .S ., Europe and Japan, playing and teaching music. He also acted in “ M ah alia,*’ an o ff-B ro a d w a y p ro du ction based on the life o f singer M ahalia Jackson. F ortune, a band leader in his own rig h t, is sounding even bet ter than he did in the early ’ 70s when he helped M cC oy T yner make some o f the m ore m em orab le m usic o f th a t decade. Dr. M a ry M cLeod B ethune (1875-1955) One of the greatest women America has produced, Mary McLeod Bethune rose from a position as field hand picking cotton in South Carolina where she was born to one as advisor, confidante and friend of Pres, and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt. She served as Roosevelt's di rector of the Negro Division of the Na tional Youth Administration and was a familiar sight at the White House where she always pleaded for justice for Blacks. Almost single-handedly she built Beth- une-Cookman College in Florida, an in stitution whose graduates number in the thousands. T .V .
