Financial d if ficulties have forced the closure of Irvington Community Day Care, a non-profit, parent-run organization that has provided before and after school care for school-age children at Irvington School since 1980. " I enrolled my child in Irvington because o f IC D C ,” said one dis tressed parent at the meeting last week where parents were informed of the closure. Board members point to budget cuts in social ser vices, uncertainty about use o f the space at Irvington School, and a de pressed economy as primary reasons for the closure. W ithin the last year, Children’s Service Division funds subsidizing before and after school care have been cut, staff funded by the now- defunct C E T A program have been lost, and the W IN program to place welfare mothers in the workforce has been abandoned. All o f these program decisions by local and fed eral authorities have adversely af fected IC D C . Attempts to remedy the financial crisis have included cutting costs by laying o ff administrators and re ducing staff hours, fund-raisers or ganized by parents, and increasing rates for child care. Although IC D C is under the umbrella o f the commu nity schools program, Principal John Chadwick told the Board he would be unable to guarantee space at Irvington School after October 1. The program at IC D C was notable for its attempts to go be yond more babysitting to the provi sion o f quality care for children. Among activities available were lan guage classes and music and cook ing classes to explore America’s multi-cultural heritage. “ The loss o f IC D C is a loss to the community," said one resident. "Parents will find it hard to get care for their kids, and the kids’ll just end up hanging around the streets.” 8haron Laonard watches, (Photo: Richard J. Brown! HEY KIDS!
