W h a t’s that knock on P o rt land fighters? W hen the G olden State W arrio rs c a p tu re d the 1974-75 N B A c h a m pionship many gave credit to Coach A l A llie s fo r re v o lu tio n iz in g the game. P rio r to that *74-’75 season most N B A coaches would use only seven and sometimes eight players during a game. A ttic s began u tiliz in g 10 and 11 players and was so successful th at other coaches soon began fo llo w ing suit. Then somewhere between ’75 and '7 6 p la y e rs th a t w ere fo rm e rly g u a rd s , now b ecam e s p e c ia lis ts . T h e y w ere o v e rn ig h t tra n s fo rm e d in to p o in t g u a rd s , o ff-g u a rd s and power forwards and small forw ards. So the coaches and G . M . ’ s started to d ra ft accordingly. The belief here is that this, too, is about to change. Success is always q u ic k ly e m u la te d by o th e rs . A n d tw o successful team s, the O re g o n State Beavers and Los Angeles L a k ers, are d o in g the m ost to re v o lu tionize the current trend in to d a y ’ s game. I f one only took a few m in utes to analyze the L aker game and (hat o f R alp h M ille r ’ s Beavers one could easily see the resemblance be tween the player personnel, and the game, too. The Lakers have versatile players, players that play m ore than one po sition. This gives a coach the luxury o f using fewer players and yet u tiliz ing a q u a lity p la y e r a ll th e tim e . T a k e N o rm N ix o n fo r e xam p le. Is N o rm a p o in t g u a rd o r an o f f guard? T he answer is both. N ixon is superb at directin g the offense and can also shoot w ith a m a zin g accu racy, which allows him to become a “ p o in t” guard whenever the situ a tio n s h o u ld p resen t its e lf. T h e n th e re ’ s E a rv in “ M a g ic ” Johnson. Johnson is unique as he can play all positions and play them well. Johnson is ju st a trem endous as set to the L a k e r team . T h e m an is amazing and is by far the most g ift ed player in the game today. R e m e m b e r J o h n s o n , w h o is so ta le n te d , le ft M ic h ig a n S tate a fte r his Sophom ore year.
