Portland Observer, June 30, 1982 Page 9 Sport Talk by Ron Sykes Sports Editor Portland gives up no. I pick point guard Kelvin Ransey for W ayne Cooper, who will serve strictly as a backup to M ychal Thompson at Center. Where’s the help? D allas is (he big winner in this trade. The M avs, drafting fou rth , will take college basketball's third* best power forward, coming out this year, Wyoming’s Bill Garnett. Experts all agree that Ralph Sampson o f Virginia is the best cen ter around with Georgetown’ s Pat Ewing not far behind. So the question here is did P o rt land gain or lose in the Ransey trade? The answer is: a standstill. The Blazers gained a badly needed big man. But lost a prem ier point guard. You be the judge. Is it wise to give up a prem ier point guard to gain a mediocre center? Also remember that Dallas was seriously considering waiving W ayne C ooper in December. Cooper was only w ithdraw n (fro m waivers) after Portland showed in terest in him. I t ’ s believed around the western conference that the Trailblazers are the sole reason M r. Cooper is still in the league. C o op er, who was a free agent, signed a m u lti-year contract with Dallas, believed to be worth I m il lion spread over 4 years. The 6-10 center has been traded three times in as many years. He was originally drafted in 1978 by Golden State in the second round. H e was traded last year to U tah in the deal that brought Bernard King to G old en State. From there it was to Dallas and now Portland. The Blazers needed help badly in the front court. W ith the addition o f Renny C a rr and W ayne C ooper Blazer brass believes they have gone from a weak rebounding team to one o f the best in the western con ference. But remem ber rebounds alone cannot win in the N B A . Draftees named You still must outscore the oppo sition in order to win games. The Blazers lost a prolific scorer in Kel vin Ransey (13.6 pm). W ith Ransey gone to D allas the Blazers made Lafayette “ F a t” lev er, 6-3, guard from A rizo n a State their top pick. M ost follow ers o f T ra ilb la z e r basketball thought the Blazers would go for Lester Conner, the 6-4 A ll-A m e ric a guard, fro m Oregon State. But true to form Blazer brass passed on the O SU product. It has been a known fact that fo r some strange reason P o rtla n d seems to think very little o f local talent. C onner is a far superior a ll- around guard than Lever. L et’s rate the two prospects in the fou r cate gories that point guards are needed to excel in. W e’ll use a 5-point grad ing system. C onner: scoring, 4 .0; defense, 5.0, passing, 4.5; rebounding, 5.0. Lever: scoring, 5.0; defense, 3.5; passing, 3.5; rebounding, 3.0. It seems that the Blazers arc look ing strictly for a scoring guard, while trading away their only good point guard. Lever will add scoring but w ha, w ill they do fo r defense. I t ’s true that Ransey wasn’t exactly a stalwart on “ D ” but he was ade quate. A ll previous scouting reports on Lever show that the 6-3 flash needs a good deal o f work in the defensive department. Still find it hard to believe a team that stresses defense, and team play, could pass on Conner. And, yes, Portland will miss Ran sey. At present second year Darnell V alentine is the only experienced point guard on the roster. Valentine needs work, work and more work if he’s to fill that all-important role. In the second round P o rtla n d ’s choice was 6-7 Lyndon Townes o f James Madison. That works out to two household names, Toens and James Madison. Los Angeles was true to form in selecting N o rth C a ro lin a ’s James Worthy number one in the draft. A t 6-9 Worhty will add depth to a team that’s already loaded. Jesse Owens Trophy Award Worthy at 6-9 is somewhat in the m old o f E a rv in Johnson. H e is q u ick, can handle the ball and a better than adequate passer and shooter. Firs, round picks should be a tre mendous boost to all teams. I can’t see this happening w ith P o rtla n d . Lafayette Lever is, at best, a second round selection. It should be remembered that un til now the Blazers have had only two first round selections on their roster M ychal Thompson and K el vin Ransey. W hat a difference a day makes, or perhaps a year. When Ransey ar rived fro m O h io State he was thought to be the one ingredient the team needed to become winners again. A fter one bad year he became expendable. L ife in the fast lane is tough.
