Dee Dodd is in her first year as head track and cross country coach at Northwestern. Northwest ern is the only predominantly white university w ith two black head coaches. W hat a p ity, especially when you consider how many a th letes are men and women o f color. If Norm Nixon continues to play so well during this N B A champion ship series he will certainly have to be considerd as the M V P . He has al ready won the award for the best- dressed player in the NBA. Nixon is M r. Dapper Dan o ff the court and maybe it’s because he has interest in a large LA clothing store. Grambling State University head basketball coach Fred H obdy an nounces that the ’82-’83 Tigers will be competing in the Indiana Classic in their regular season o f scheduled games. The Classic, to be played in Indianapolis, the 29th and 30th, will be hosted by Bobby Knight-coached Indiana Hoosiers, national college champions in 80-81. O th er teams com peting w ill be Nebraska from the Big Eight and Cornell o f the Ivy League. Veteran Heavyweight Ernie Sha ver w ill go up against the young h ard h ittin g B illy Joe Thom as o f Lexa, in the ten-round main event June 22 in the Astroarena. Thomas, who brags a 16-6 record, is ready for the veteran shavers w ith 63 wins. Shavers’ last two fights prove he is in top condition for this match. He - recently K O ’cd form er European champion, Joe Bugner and prior to that match was his impressive win over over A li H äk in , from Travers City, M L , who had a record o f 17-0. They call him “ The Doctor o f the Pines.” When things aren’ t going right fo r the P h ilad e lp h ia 76ers, the te a m ’s ace re lie f man simply dons his "L o v e tro n ” uniform and starts wreaking havoc on the oppo sition, m ainly the Los Angeles Lakers. D a rry l D aw kin s, 76crs much maligned center, has certainly taken more than his share o f abuse this year for his non-production. Daw kins, during the cham pion ship series led by L A 3-1, has been a catalyst in a losing cause. In game one Darryl came o ff the bench with 3:30 left in the first quarter and im mediately let Laker Center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar know that a change was about to occur. In the next 2 '4 -m in u te s D a ry l scored six points, all from within (he 2-fo ot range. C learly establishing his turf. In game two the Sixers got o ff to a rocky start and Dawkins decided it was time to tkork on the problem . W ith the score 6-0 in favor o f L A the man from “ Lovetron” went to work. He scored first on a lay-up in Jab- b a r’ s face, then on a thunderous d u n k, a soft 13-fo o t ju m p shot later and the game was knotted at 13 all. And this all was a result o f D ar ryl’s aggressive play. Jabbar was be wildered as Dawkins continued his spectacular play. Before his leg in ju ry (a broken bone) Dawkins was the subject o f many trade rumors. Seventy-sixer owner H a ro ld Katz shut o ff all such talk by signing their 6-11 sixer center to a five-year con tract. Dawkins, from "none” college, is thought by some to be grossly over rated. I he feeling here is that the aver age fan expects too much o f young Darryl. C o nstantly during this p la y o ff series announcers Bill Russell and Dave Stockton have reminded their audience o f D a r r y l’ s m in im al re bound shots. No, once have they re minded their listeners that Dawkins is playing on a leg that is still only 70 per cent healed. As a result D aw kin s , usually a starter, has been com ing o f f the bench, and playing very w e ll. As witnessed by his 22-point outburst in game two, and followed by 16 in game three. “ The situation (on the bench) is more pressurized than a starting ro le ,” Dawkins said, “ bu, I don’ t care how they use me, as long as they use me,” he said. Dawkins believes that the Sixers are a team o f destiny and that this year the men from Philly will wear their firs, NBA championship rings. could run with the Lakers, the feeling here that Philly would go down in four. Now, I must revise my wrong ful deeds and add one m ore, since the 76ers played way over their heads in game two. And you had to believe that Norm Nixon and the always-steady Magic Johnson would not continue shoot ing 4-13 and 3-14 respectively. Even though the 76ers were able to win game two 110-94, they were unable to establish any superiority over the talent-laden Lakers. The Sixers had to know that it took both a near-perfect game from them and a terrible performance by the L a k ers, to pull out their lone victo ry. And what more can be said o f the work o f Bob McAdoo. Bullet Bob is playing now like a man possessed. “ Everyone is talking about Dr. J. not having a rin g , and how they would like to see the ‘ D o c to r’ win one. Well, how about me,” beamed M cAdoo. And the 76ers w ill not earn one this year for Julius, mainly because they are unable to get any offensive help fo r A ndrew Toney and the “ D octor.” A fte r leading the Celtics 3-1 and letting them come back to even the series, everyone— including yours tru ly — thought that it was all over for the fin al game to be played in Boston. But somebody forgot to tell Toney and Erving and the tw o o f them personally destroyed the Bos ton dream o f becoming the only team in the last decade to win back to back titles. E rvin g scored 29 points, w hile the hot-shooting Tournaments M onthly Albina Tennis Tournament For the Lakers and 76ers this is a rematch o f their N B A cham p io n ship round o f two years ago when the Lakers won in six games. Rem ember that Sunday evening when Magic Johnson, then only a rookie, had to fill in for injured superstar Kareem A b d u l-J a b b a r at center. And all Magic did was to eventually play all five positions, scored 42 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. This L a k e r team has been near perfect in p la yo ff action winning 9 out o f 10 games. Located inside the National Guard Bldg. Toney continues to perform well against the Lakers, During regular season play he scored 27 at the Forum and came back w ith a whopping 46 at the Spectrum. Even though Toney had a big 36 on Tues day it was not enough to overhaul the fast-breaking Lakers. Heavy Duty E « Strength, Long Low-Cost Mileage And can anyone remember during the early season why the usually staid and easy going Magic Johnson cried out against the coaching phil osophy o f then-coach Paul W est- head? W ell, just in case no one re m em bers. . .it was because M agic thought the Laker offense was too stagnant. And who now can say he was wrong? RIB HI-MILER $ r^ o o 70aifi TT ■ Strong, bruise-resistant r cord carcass T W Sam H ouston State sophomore center Yommy Sangodeyi o f Nigeria has reportedly written the National Basketball Association stating he was “ fo o le d ” into signing papers that made him eligible for the N B A draft. Sangodeyi, at the urging o f his coach, asked to have his eligibility at Sam Houston reinstated despite re nouncing it earlier this month under provisions o f the N C A A early entry regulations. Yom m y was said to believe (hat he was only going to be provided with areas in which to play summer ball. T h at’s all. Former African basketball coach Christopher Pond, when reached in his home o f R aleigh, N .C ., said, "Y o m m y knew wha, he was doing, he signed the contract because he felt that at his age (24) and his large fam ily, that it would be in his best interest to sign now.” Sangodeyi is 6 -1 0 , 220-pound player who averages 9.6 points and 4.6 boards a game. He has been de scribed as a very aggressive player and said to have good potential, bu, did have some difficulty in adjusting to the American college game.
