Three decades ago when stock
car racing was in its infancy in the
Deep South, a man b u ilt a
reputation racing on the dirt bull
ring3. His name was Lee P E tty ,
and though he was not as flashy
as some other drivers o f that era,
Petty was always steady and
always managed to finish -
usually near the front.
He earned a nickname, “ M r .
Consistency".
O n the W inston P ro m o to r

bears some similarity in style with
Lee Petty.
His name is Radny Goss. And
Goss is the tw o-w heeled “ M r .

He's been running pro a long time.

The New York Yankees gave Reg

change to Billy Ball and away from
their image or one o f baseball’s long
ball teams. The experiment has not

stands now at 12 wins and 16 losses.
The C alifornia Angels with Reggie
batting cleanup has a record o f 20
wins and 12 losses. Would you trade
a Mayberry for a Jackson?

This weekend w ill be the second
opening weekend for the league in
Oregon and the city parks, school
grounds and several private fields
w ill be fu ll o f color and action.
Games are played from 9 am to 4
pm each Saturday and each evening,
beginning around 3:30. A special
spot on Saturday is the field at the
Alpenrose Dairy on S .W . Shattuck
Road. Alpenrose D airy has m a in
tained an excellent facility that has
hosted every little league in the city
for special games and tournaments
and continues to be the site where
Saturday is set aside specifically to
keep this trad itio n alive. Five
ieagues in the S.W . area o f Portland
share the field during the week
nights.
L ittle League, the oldest youth
sport organization in the country, is
alive and well and even though the
problems often make the headlines,
these are outweighed by a mile by
the positives experienced every day
and every Saturday at the city park
from April through August.

Little Leaguers need support
Every day a former little leaguer
gets a hit in the big leagues, in Seat
tle, Kansas City, Los Angeles or the
Beavers. These players are a long
way from the local city park but that
is where it all started. It starts all
over every spring and the Portland
area is no exception.
13,000 little leaguers, boys and
girls, have taken to the fields in the
