Gaylord Perry still chasing records G aylord P erry , signed as a free agent by the M arin e rs on M arch 5th, is closing in on several baseball milestones as he enters his 20th big league season. He is three wins away from becoming just the I Sth pitcher in m ajo r league history to record 300 lifetime victories. O n ly seven o f the current 300- game winners won all their games a fte r the turn o f the cen tury, the most recent to reach the mark being Early Wynn, who picked up number 300 in I9 6 3 fo r the C leveland In dians. Perry is just >72 from tying the a ll-tim e strikeou t record held by W a lte r Johnson (3 ,5 0 8 ). H e has fanned 200 or more batters in a sea son eight times but has never led the league. He has fanned ten or more batters in a game 39 times, including a single-game high o f 15. H e has struck out 14 in a game twice. Other near records held by Perry are: Innings, 7,h (4 ,9 2 9 ); games started, 5th (628); games pitched, 17th (715); shutouts, tie fo r 12th (5 2 ). In the P o s t-W a r era (1946- 1981, he ranks second in wins (297) and 1st in strikeouts (3,336). In the Post-Expansion era (19 61 -8 1) he ranks first in wins (297) and strike outs (3,336) and 8th in earned run average (2.99). In the last ten years (1972-1981) he ranks 4th in wins (163), 6th in strikeouts (1,730) and 8th in ERA (3.01). A t 43 Perry is the oldest active player in the m ajo r leagues. He is the only pitcher to win the Cy Young Aw ard in both leagues. He won the American League honor in 1972 when he was 24-16 with Cleve lan d, and the N a tio n a l League award in 1978 when he was 21-6 with the San Diego Padres. D u ring the 1981 season, Perry registered an 8-9 record with the A t lanta Braves. M e and the S piller: M l e i being accused o f throwing doctored base balls, spitballs, Slippery E lm and Vaseline pitches and so on, Gaylord com bined w ith then C leveland sportswriter Bob Sudyk in 1974 to write M e and the Spiller—A n A uto biographical Confession. The book included an admission from Perry that he did indeed throw some ille gal pitches when he was struggling to establish himself with the Giants in 1964. Last year, the “ p u ffb a ll” was ruled illegal by N .L . President Chub Feeney; Gaylord was accused o f massaging the ball with the resin bag so that a cloud o f smoke emerged as the pitch was delivered. Sport Talk by Ron Sykes, Sports Editor Kansas C ity’s C liff Robinson was nicknam ed “ Pine S o l” in grade school because he spent so much time on the bench, riding the pines. Charles Bradley, Boston's fabu lously muscled 6-5 rookie guard, has been nicknamed “ Baby Daw kins” by teammates who feel his strength, jumping ability and fancy dunks are worthy o f Philadelphia’s 6-11 D a r ryl Dawkins. Greg Ballard, ex-U . o f O . great, in his fifth pro season has emerged as a key palyer fo r the p la y o ff- bound Washington Bullets. Bullard has carried the load throughout the ’8 1-’82 season and if the Bullets are to do everything in post-season play the 6-7 Ballard must come through. Maurice Lucas on Maurice Lucas: “ I'd like to make it clear that I play an intellig en t gam e. I d o n ’ t just bump people around and push folks. I can do mostly anything on the court. I always try to study my opponent. I try to be smarter than the other guy.” Lucas remains in fact still one o f the best power forwards in the NBA today. The 6-9 Lucas had another good year averaging 18.5 points per game and nine rebounds. W h ile P o rtla n d ’ s T ra ilb la ze rs constantly cry for a good power for ward and a good big man one just has to wonder what things would have been like this year with Lucas and Moses M a lo n e . For sure the reason w o u ld n ’ t now be over for Blazer fans. Reggie S m ith , 6-3 guard o f the New Y o rk N icks, played in his eight-hundredth consecutive game last January against Chicago. Smith now needs fo r ty -fo u r m okre to break the record currently held by Johnny Kerr. I f he plays in every game this season he’ ll end up with 841, three short o f the record. The college d ra ft is believed by some to be the foundation for build ing a successful franchise. Case in point are the Dallas Mavericks and D e tro it Pistons. Rookies Isaiah Thom as and K elly T rip u ck a have helped the Pistons attain respecta bility both on the flo o r and at the gate. W hile in Dallas, a rookie has led the Mavericks in scoring in nine teen o f their first thirty games. M a rk A g u irre , 6-7 ex-D e P a u l great, was the leader fifteen times before suffering a broken foot. Jay Vincent, another 6-7 Michigan State product replaced Aguirre in the start ing line-up and led the team an addi tional ten times. Aguirre and Vincent helped D al las improve their record from 18 wins to a 28-53 record today. Dallas has shown good im provem ent for a second year expansion team . D e troit, led by the two rookies, moved from the cellar last year to third in the central division with a 38-42 rec ord and was in a dog fight for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Con ference. Many believe only the mid-season in ju ry to Thomas kept the Pistt ns out o f post-season play. When Georgetown returned home from that loss to North Carolina in the N C A A title game, Georgetown supporters tried to cheer up Fred Brown, who mistook N orth C aro lina’s Jame Worthy for a teammate and in a horrifying m is-fire tossed his team ’s last chance away— with the follow ing sigh: “ Freddie, you helped us get there. W e know you care.” That had to mean something to the young man. W ith all the talk these days o f how freely big money can be o b tained in am ateur track, here’s an item from the Fort W orth Telegram on the Texas relays: C a rl Lew is, H o u s to n ’ s in elig ib le N C A A 100- meter and long jum p champion, was here to watch his sister perform, but he didn’t compete. His asking price was too high— $10,000. W ith money like that floating around, one has to wonder if Reynolds Nchemiah can afford to take a pay cut to play pro fessional football. And while on the subject o f Ne- hemiah and professional fo o td all, rem em ber you heard it first here when we flatly predicted that Nehe- miah would sign a forty-niner con tract. R eliable sources in the Bay area told us as early as M arch 5th that Reynolds and the Forty-niners were only a heart beat away. Skeets became the highest paid free agent ever to sign an N F L con tra c t. H e rep orted ly received $500,000 with $100,000 bonus just to sign his name. 7JP TU 7Ì MALL 205 jim h a t FISHER!
