Mystic, Mystic, and More Mystic Sp rin g Visit D rop Ins Welcome In a place called M ujic. magic was p a ri o f an everyday way o f life. People in the M u jic world lived in brotherhood and kept a positive attitude to guide their daily lives. The people who p u t magic in their music were called M uji- cians. Bear in m ind that all you see, or don't see, may or may not be real. . . . Perhaps the most unusual and original group in the world today is Mystic M erlin, a quintet practicing the art o f “ m u jic .” In doing so, they are at once musicians employing the craft o f magic during their performances and magicians playing enticing strains o f rock, jazz and R&B while purveying their special illusory skills. A lthough it would seem d iffic u lt to transm it such a wonderful combination to a record album, Mystic M erlin have done just that on “ Sixty Thrills A M inute” (February 1981), a truly magical ex perience. F ittingly, the nucleus o f Mystic M erlin was formed in a room known as “ the Dungeon” in Brooklyn, where guitarist Jerry Anderson, bassist Clyde Bullard and sax player Barry Strutt began rehearsing in 1977. Although they originated solely as a musical enterprise. Clyde’ s interest in magic spread amongst them. Another member, drummer Sly Randolph, soon appeared, but finding a lead singer was not as easily accomplished. “ We had to make about 49 disappear before we found K eith G onzales,’ ’ says S tru tt, an annular man with a dark beard and eyes to match. British Star Searches For Her Black Father Mystic Merlin The group, originally known as Mystic M erlin’s Magic Band, played va rious New York street haunts, including the Casablanca C lub, where their high-wattage show blew out all the power. In 1979 they signed to C apitol and by February, 1980, had their first LP, “ Mystic M erlin,” on the racks. It was a remarkably solid excursion for a band that had been together such a relatively short time. “ It just came naturally,” says Clyde Bullard, the group's ace illusionist and prestidigitator. “ We are very tig h tly-kn it and compatible. Besides, we all have a flair for perform ing.” Each band member brings talents to the group outside o f his musical en deavors. Gonzales, fo r example, is responsible fo r all album cover graphics in addition to his vocal chores. 917 S.W.
