Portland Observer, March 11, 1982 Page 15 Young boxer starts early Gary Sykes is a good example o f a late devotee to the world o f pugil ism. One o f three c h ild re n , tw o o f them girls, G ary, being in the m id dle, had to fight both up and down to maintain his turf at home. G ary began his boxing career at the tender age o f seven under the tu telage o f his first coach Lee Jenkins at M att Dishman C om m unity C en ter. The Dishman boxing team holds their workouts five days a week and Gary seldom misses a practice. “ I enjoy it n o w ,” beams G a ry, “ but at first I think it was mostly my Dad’s idea.” Henry Sykes, a de voted father, travels the Northwest w ith his son and is his staunchest supporter.” Quote. “ D o n ’ t mind the tra v e l," Henry says. “ As long as my son enjoys it I ’ ll keep going. I ’ m seeing him develop, and that’s good. H e’s had only eight fights and has shown good poise and a nice left hook.” G ary has com piled quite an im pressive record during his four years o f boxing. His ever growing trophy case now contains eight trophies and two ribbons. He has won trophies in such places as Salem, Longview, Chehal is, Beaverton, Vancouver and Port land. The Sykes live in Vancouver but travel to P o rtla n d d aily fo r training and bouts. Boxing is a great way to keep in shape and W illa and Henry Sykes, G a ry ’ s parents, are physical fitness buffs. W hile their son is traveling, the Sykes often use the o p p o rtu n ity to get in a good workout themselves. ” 1 like to w ork o u t, but d o n ’ t care much fo r b o x in g ,” mused W illa . ” 1 seldom attend his matches, simply because I hate see ing him get h it.” The Dishman boxing team’s next match will be held in early March at M att Dishman Community Center. A t the 65-p ou n d class G a ry is considered a strong aggressive pounder. His long range plan is to keep working hard. He has no pro fessional ambitions but says, “ The 1987 O lym pics w o u ld n ’ t be too bad.” Those closest to the young fighter believe that if hard work and dedi cation mean anything then G a ry ’ s ambition will one day be reality. 1 Vacuum Cleaner Headquarters : 8 For All Me kes and Models (One Block North of Broadway on Union) EUREKA ELECTRIC CO. G A R Y SYKES The w in n e r.. Georgetown! by A t McGilberry The second season is here. It ’s the most exciting dram a in college sports— the N .C .A .A . College Bas ketball playoffs. It has in my opin ion one o f the strongest fields in years. The tourney will bring many joys and d is a p p o in tm c n ts ^ fljjfi ready for some real excitement. I ’m going out on the limb and will pick the winners. In the Eastern Regionals it will be N o rth C a ro lin a . This is a strong team w ith W o rth y , P erkin s, and D ougherty giving N o rth C aro lin a the strongest front line in the Colle giate ranks. Dean Sm ith has the horses this year to rule in the East. In the Midwest it will be DePaul. In the past the post season hasn’ t been too good for Coach M eyer. I think he’ll reach the semis this time. V illa n o v a w ill push them all the way. In the Mideast I have to go with the skyscraper Ralph Sampson. He is just too much for the rest o f the crowd. Minnesota will press but will fade under Sampson’ s shot-block ing and defense. The best team as we have said all year is G eo rg eto w n . G eorge Thompson is the best coach in the country and (h e ir w hole team is playing great at the right time o f the year. W e pick Georgetown to win the West and win the whole ball o f wax. Il will be great to see if it all comes out this way; have fun and bet your house o f Georgetown. O regon State should cry w o lf. Georgetown should never be in the W estern R eg io n al. W ashington D .C . is not in the W est; w ith o u t these politics, Oregon State would reach the final four. game Sunday, 10-4. W ilson smashed his third home run o f the season in the loss to W ashington State. Jeff Myers went the distance for the victory over LCSC. LC SC played W ashington State today for the championship. Lewis- C lark State’s lone two losses came at the hands o f the Beavers and they entered the game w ith a previous win over W S U and a 3-2 tou rn ey m ark. W ashington State was 4-1. Eastern Washington finished play 1- 4. Pacific is led by Warren A rakaki, a N A IA A ll-A m erican as a sopho more, and outfielders Terence Len- dio and Bobby G e b h a rd t. They opened their season today at home versus Judson Baptist. W illam ette will play their first game o f the sea son against the Beavers Sunday. Senior C liff C otton, a .333 hitter in 1981, leads the Bearcats. Oregon State split th e ir fo u r games over the weekend. They got o ff to a slow start with a 4-3, 10-inn- ing loss to Eastern W ashing to n S aturday a fte rn o o n . In the 7 pm nightcap, they pounded host Lewis- Clark State for 15 runs on only nine hits in w inning, 15-7. Jim W ilson appears to be the offensive weapon head coach Jack Roley was banking on as the Corvallis junior went 3 x 5 with five runs batted in and a pair o f long distance tw o -ru n home runs. Shane Gallagher recorded the win in relief of starter M ike Gorman. W ashington State won the slug fest the next morning. 13-9, but the Beavers repeated their clubbing o f Lewis-Clark State in the afternoon < I I < I » Can help you earn and save money plus be satisfied with our service.
